Life was chaos Sunday night, and while I was fielding calls about flights and cars, I was sort of watching the Oscars. I texted Mini a photo of this dress. My fav of the night.
OMG - life . . . nonstop. Some of it is my own doing. Shock. (Yes, I'm referring to my road trip to attend a St. Pat's party 3 hrs away - no regrets, but TIRED). I'm behind on commenting and responding, but caught up on reading. I've been trying to blog and comment when time allows, not concerning myself with a schedule. As a result, I sometimes feel behind and disconnected, and I've even considered waving the white blog flag, because time tends to pull me in different directions. But I'm here today, and I have things to share
Hail hell no: What's with the crazy weather lately? We had record breaking sized hail, measuring at 5-6 inches during a storm last week. Yes, 5-6 INCHES. It was loud in my closet which is essentially in the attic, where I was putting away laundry. I wondered if it was dangerous to be in there.
A few years ago, most of our neighbors had their roofs replaced after a tornado, or a hail storm, or all of the above. We intended to wait till we could get a guy we know to do it. Preferred to give our business to someone we knew. That never materialized. A few months ago a roofer came to the door, offering to file a claim. Insurance is covering our roof - HUGE!
Photos someone posted of hail
near our house. Not the
biggest pieces, but still BIG.
After this hail storm: roofing places bombarded us with phone calls, text messages, and knock on our door. I finally hung a note over our doorbell. OUR NEW ROOF ARRIVES APRIL 15. DON'T RING OUR BELL. WE'RE ALL SET.
Translation: wake up a sleeping baby in my house, and you'll be assessing more than damaged roofs.
Hard to believe: I'm the last one to know stuff, esp other people's business. A 'for sale' sign went in our friend/neighbor's yard in fall '24. I saw him at Curly's volleyball game.
Me: Mike, where are you guys going? You can't leave the neighborhood. You're our favorite neighbors.
Mike: We're getting a divorce.
You could've blown me over. When our kids were younger, we hung out with them. They have 3 girls. Oldest is Mini's age. Curly's between the younger two. She played volleyball with them. Our kids were on swim team together in the summers. Mike and Mary - the most fun, laid back, and hilarious friends. They hosted the best Halloween parties for adults and their costumes were always genius. They invited us over to have drinks on their deck during covid (some of you might recall - we got a concerning text from Ed about Lad and we bolted minutes after we arrived). Back in 2018 maybe, we invited 3 couples to an ND game before we had a kid there. We all drove in GW. Tailgating with Mike and Mary and the other couples was a blast.
It became clear during the rest of that '24 volleyball season that Mike had a problem. He was inebriated at the games. He'd been told by doctors that he had to stop drinking. He tried rehab briefly. His liver failed and he passed away a few weeks ago.
The 3 daughters spoke at the service on Saturday with the oldest sharing how addiction is a disease, and that they'd miss their dad so much, but the way he died doesn't change who he was or what a great dad he was.
She really nailed it. My heart aches for them. It's still so hard to believe.
When things settle down, I'll drop off food for them. I wish they were still in their house down the street. I miss Mike waving as I drove by him while he was walking his dog.
Oh the weather ALL OVER is frightful: Fortunately the weather to and from Grand Rapids was fine. Yes, I went. More on that adventure later.

Coach sent this pic on his flight to Delaware. "There's a person under this blanket in the seat next to me."
Coach missed Mike's funeral, because he was teaching in Delaware. He texted me Sunday that loads of flights to Chicago were being cancelled. In my haze of a busy weekend, I'd not seen a forecast. I was clueless. He sat on the plane for 6 hours hoping they'd take off. When I went to bed, he wasn't sure he'd get home.
Meanwhile, Reg was on his way back to Omaha after spring break. A kid 'Thomas' was driving him. He was a few hours away from campus.
He texted me: MOM WE WERE IN A BAD CAR ACCIDENT JUST NOW.
Thankfully he called one second later. Things weren't as bad as the text sounded. Praise the lord. Thank goodness I don't have a heart condition, but hmm - maybe I do now? No one was hurt. The authorities shut down the interstate in Iowa. Snow, blowing, slippery roads. The trifecta of bad driving weather.
I called Tank who jumped into action and connected me with other Creighton students driving back, hoping they might be able to pick up Reg and Thomas. We decided everyone should stay in nearby hotels, and a few guys would pick up the 2 stranded guys Monday morning. Then a few more Creighton kids drove up in a Jeep, picked up Reg and Thomas, drove 35 mph on back roads, making it back to campus late Sunday night.
I'm so grateful no one was hurt.

This text exchange is from Monday night, as I was drafting this. Ed flew to Houston today for work. Ugh.
I woke up in the middle of the night, surprised to see Coach asleep in the bed next to me. It would've felt more 'Trains Planes and Automobiles'-ish if . . .
Me: Where are your hands?
Him: Between two pillows . . .
Me: THOSE AREN'T PILLOWS.
But I thought I should let him sleep vs waking him up to recreate a beloved movie scene. Turns out he got home at 2 am.

Crazy weather in your neck of the woods? Do you get roofers coming out of the woodwork after a storm?

So glad everyone made it home and school safely. Check those weather reports before traveling, college kids!
ReplyDeleteWe have your weather, though not the large Hail. I canceled class yesterday because I was not going to drive to work in a blizzard. Half my students wouldn't make it anyway.
Continued prayers forc your family. I hope -you continue to post when you can- your are such a great storyteller!
mbmom11 - I'm so grateful that he and all the other kids are ok. So scary. Coach obsesses over weather reports, but he was not home. I'm glad you cancelled class. Thank you for the high praise, much appreciated.
DeleteThat hail is UNREAL! And a new roof covered by insurance - what a win. Everyone in my family thinks I'm crazy with checking the weather everywhere we go or are about to go, but somebody's got to do it or, well, your family shows the other side - ha!
ReplyDeleteColleen - That hail broke windshields. I felt like it wasn't safe to be in my closet (sort of in the attic) or standing near a window. Freaky. You and coach are in the same boat, but I was all over the place and didn't ever look at what weather was heading our way.
DeleteI've never seen hail that large before!
ReplyDeleteNo roofers in our area as of yet. Talk to me after a hurricane. ;)
Girl, the car accident/weather/planes/trains stuff will definitely take years off your life! I'm glad everyone turned out ok and got to where they needed.
So very sorry to hear about your old neighbor Mike; such a sad situation for his family and friends.
Suz - Those photos aren't even the largest pieces. It looked like someone dumped buckets of baseballs in our backyard. Unreal.
DeleteI can only imagine the 'friends' you make with the workers after a hurricane.
Yes, that planes and autos and the scary phone text . . . well, it's amazing I managed to sleep that night.
Thank you. Yes, it just seems surreal. Mini was such a mess at the service that she made me drop her home (down the block) before Curly and I went to the luncheon. She was a puddle. It's just so hard to fathom. They moved out of the hood, so I wasn't seeing him walk the dog - but I think part of me just believes he's living across town still. Ugh.
ARGH the car wreck text my goodness! That would give nay mom a heart condition. Glad all is well. It is wild how many ppl I know getting a divorce. It's like the reverse wedding era of my early twenties.
ReplyDeleteSarah - Yes, the car wreck text was a heart stopper. Oh, no. That's sad. I think back in the day people got married a lot younger, but I don't know many people divorcing. What's going on?
DeleteCrazy heat. We are supposed to be over 100 for a few days this week, and it does not forebode well for the upcoming summer. I've seen 119, I think we'll easily hit 120 or higher this year. Ahh, Phoenix. One of my kids is supposed to be flying out of Boston today, and they're basically having a hurricane, so who knows what will happen there.
ReplyDeleteKara - It hurts to wear clothes today. Like it's that cold - my skin is annoyed because SO DRY. I don't usually wear jeans when I babysit, but I did today because of St. Pat's and my outfit, etc. Ouch. My poor skin - it's crazy ass cold here. Like in the 20s. I'm hoping the crazy weather is behind us as Curly and I get ready to fly to SC on Thursday to check out a potential college ball offer.
DeleteYikes!
ReplyDeleteWhat a scary text to get from Reg! I'm glad he and the driver were okay and were able to get a ride back to campus.
I've only seen hail a few times in my life and never bigger than a pea. I imagine those big chunks can do a lot of damage to roofs and siding. New roofs aren't cheap, so it's great that insurance is covering yours!
Yesterday the weather was a bit crazy. It was 60+ degrees in the morning and at 5:30 in the afternoon it started snowing. We got about 3 inches and I suspect the department of transportation wasn't expecting it, because roads were horrible this morning. I saw the state of the main road and went back to bed!
So sorry to hear about neighbor Mike.
Jenny in WV - It could've been a very very bad phone call and he called me like the second it happened and to him it was 'bad' but if everyone is OK - that qualifies as not-so bad, right?
DeleteThat big hail did some serious damage - like it broke windshield. It was HUGE. That is a crazy weather day. We got a snowstorm out of nowhere the day Curly and I flew to Tampa to look at that college - and yikes ,it took us an hour to get to the airport vs 30 min. Ah, going back to bed on a snowy morning sounds delightful.
Thank you. We are so very sad. His family has been through so much.
Hello! I think I'm able to comment again! But oh my goodness, that's a lot to take in. The hail alone - what on earth? Thank goodness your roof will soon be fixed up. My dad was out in some hail once, and it was only marble sized, and it left welts all over him. His worst injury was on his hand. Yikes. Hail is scary.
ReplyDeleteMichelle- I'm glad you can comment again too. That hail was monster sized. What on earth? I was upstairs trying to take a photo of my yard, because it looked nutty, but the screen on the window made it tough. I can imagine that would've been really painful to be out and get hit with hail.
DeleteWow what a scary time! I'm glad no one was hurt and everyone eventually made it home. We're in Seattle and we've had the mildest winter this year. Higher than usual temps and the only snow this year was last week, and we only got a light dusting. I pray warmer, spring temps arrive for you soon!
ReplyDeleteCindy - That's crazy. This has been a very long winter. It started really early and while we had a few weird breaks now and then- it's still freezing out this week. Snow back on the ground. Ugh.
DeleteOh my goodness, THAT TEXT. I would have had a heart attack on the spot. I'm very glad he called you right away, and very glad no one was hurt.
ReplyDeleteThat is CRAZY WEATHER. And the fact that you have to put a sign on the door for roofers... wow, I guess a lot of people are in need of new roofs right now!
Also- so sad about your former neighbor. Ugh. It does sound like his daughter spoke beautifully. Addiction is a disease, and it must have been so hard for his family to witness it.
Jenny - It was scary. I'm sure it felt 'bad' because it had just happened and I believe it was the first time he was ever in an accident. I'm so relieved - it could have been a lot worse.
DeleteOMG - the weather really brings the repair people out in droves. You can see them driving around the neighborhood in their big pick up trucks.
It was so sad and it is still so hard to believe it happened - maybe because they don't live in the neighborhood anymore.
That whole incident would have shaved a few years off of my life. I'm glad they were okay. This weather has been ridiculous. I do know people who have been able to get free roofs after hailstorms, but we've never been contacted. Honestly, it always sounded shady to me, but I never got the details about how the whole insurance/roof thing works.
ReplyDeleteBijoux - It was so scary. I'm relieved he called me a moment after he sent that text. I suspect the whole thing freaked him out so much that it his mind it was bad - and being in an accident in a snowstorm in a friend's car no where near home and not at school yet does sound BAD. right? Anyway, so glad they were OK.
DeleteYeah, the roof thing - well, Coach has been worried that we'd have to replace our roof since we first bought this house and so so many people got new roofs thru insurance adjustments that we are grateful that our insurance is covering it. Our roof must've shown a ton of storm damage.
That text would have sent me through the roof and then right into a panic attack. Holy crap!
ReplyDeleteThe weather has been ridiculous. Up in the 70s, then the next day snow and the 20s. And did you hear the sonic boom from the meteor on St. Patrick's Day morning? I did NOT have that on my bingo card for this March.
Nance - Thankfully, I had barely processed the text before he called and I heard his voice.
DeleteThe weather has been bananas. What the what? We've seen one extreme to the other. I did not hear the sonic boom. Leprechauns playing tricks?
This is Lisa, blogger won’t let me log in! The weather has been nutty for us, too. 11” of snow last week, 77 yesterday, back to highs in the 40s today. This is why I hate spring in Minnesota! I am sorry to hear about the death of your friend!
ReplyDeleteLisa - Sorry about blogger not allowing you to log in. You are not the first person to mention it and I'm unsure if there is something I can do to fix it. The weather has been nuts. I sat and soaked up some sun on Saturday and then yesterday the wind and cold were staggering. I don't recall another March with such extremes for such an extended time. Goodness.
DeleteTHAT TEXT. I would have been in full-blown panic attack.
ReplyDeleteThis is the time of year that makes living in Florida worth it. The weather has been GLORIOUS! Don't worry - we'll be in hell very soon. :)
stephany - I know, I know! But I think in his world it was a bad accident. Because I don't think he's every been in one, which is a good thing. I'm sure he was freaked out. Thank goodness he followed that up with a phone call.
DeleteI'm here for the Florida weather - - - which is to say, I'm coming THERE for the Florida weather. I'll reach out when I arrive once I get my bearings, if I can find a window to meet. ;)
