Monday: the adoption went well. Some sappy SOB squeaked the words out during the poem portion of the proceedings, so that was, er, embarrassing. The poem was light and fluffy till the last few touching-moment lines, so why did the emotion ooze out of me like jelly from a jelly donut from the get go?
I asked our lawyer for permission to read something and she had to ask the judge. He adopted a few older kids himself, and he was great. Also, he has a club foot (the topic was referenced in my poem and afterwards he was like Club foot over here too!). My lawyer said she'd never had anyone ask to speak/share something.
What? I guess I watch too much TV or movies or something. Am I alone here?
Sibling support surprise Backing this bus up to let you know that all six older kids came home and attended court. No one was late. Phew.
Sunday late afternoon I snuck out of the house, drove to ND with a stop at Midway (believe it or not there's another airport adventure to share. Put on your Depends though, because Mini was in the car and it was high-larry-us). Four hour round trip later, I walked in and Kay was sitting on the couch and when she heard Reg talk, she spun around, and was like HOW? HUH? Rae's face was pure joy when she saw the college kids.
The talk: Coach and I did sit Kay down Sunday night. Per our therapist we told her We show up for you always, and we're the first people in your life to do that. We're working hard here to make you part of this family. Time for you to do some work. I referenced all the big kids in the next room (you could hear them laughing and chatting) and how they were all here for her. We asked if she wanted to be part of this family. YES, she does. Let's just say, we made our point.
In attendance: The grade school principal. My mom's sister, even though I didn't call her till the day before. Had to read her directions over the phone because she doesn't do GPS. She has a phone which is lightyears ahead of my folks, so there's that. The girls' social worker and two other DCFS people. Two of Rae's girlfriends plus their moms. Kay's bestie. The court room was packed. My bestie zoomed it and managed to video the whole thing, which was great because Coach's folks weren't able to work the zoom. They live over an hour away. Coach's sister and a nephew zoomed. His sisters sent sweet personalized gifts and there are enough flowers in our kitchen to put a wedding venue to shame.

| How can we balance out this crooked looking sign - Oh, here's a recycling bin and a seat from the minivan. |
While I was driving, Coach texted Mini. "Did you see how Mom hung the banner? I need to fix this, any ideas?" I think it's cute that he didn't think she would tell me what he texted her. He dismantled the backyard volleyball net to use one side of it. Big improvement.
I'd like points for being the best hodge-podger out there.
Since then stress in the shape of:
* my dad landed in the hospital later Monday afternoon, blood in stool. He came home last night (Wed.) after having a colonoscopy and an endoscopy and they can't find the source of the bleeding. He's frustrated. They're acting like, All good. But is he really?
* On Thursday last week, I got an email from the camp the girls attend quarterly (same camp they did before the fam portrait). The camp was being restructured which we knew (extending the umbrella to kids with trauma background and not just those whose parents have been on drugs), so 8 days before the Sept 12th weekend camp (like NOW!) - they alerted us that they rescheduled it for mid-October.
* Coach and I are heading to Creighton for family weekend and now we have no childcare for the girls. It was supposed to be so well timed. Damn it. My focus last weekend was on dealing with sneaky behavior, creating banners, writing poetry, and driving two four hour trips - so now we're scrambling to find coverage/rides, etc. Not.Fun. Especially because we feel like Kay has to be watched like a hawk.
I told one of my girlfriends today who I hit up for yet another favor, "If only I had sisters."
FYI: f you have a WordPress blog, I'm not able to sign in for some reason. Sometimes I can comment and sometimes I draft a lengthy comment and it kicks it out. (Kari, sorry but that happened and I haven't been back to figure it out yet).

What was the last thing you hodge-podged? Have you gotten choked up unexpectedly?

I got cooked up seeing the banner! You guys go all out! What a wonderful day. Hopefully you'll get the weekend straightened out.
ReplyDeletembmom11 - I could not believe how inexpensive the banner was. I did it thru Walgreens and with a coupon is was like $27. I was blown away. I do think the girls enjoyed that special surprise. The weekend plans are set - not as relaxing as what I thought we'd be experiencing - lots of moving parts, but fingers crossed.
DeleteHappy Official Adoption Day!!! I'm an early bird so I get to see the pic of your lovely family! If I had been there, we could have had a contest to see who could hang a banner more unevenly.
ReplyDeleteI hope something works out for this weekend so that you can go to the family weekend in peace.
Birchie - Thank you. Good to know that you and I could be competitors in a Who Can Hang This More Crooked competition. Fingers crossed that the weekend at home goes as planned. Lots of moving parts, but Coach's coworker, a woman who has worked for him for decade plus and is like family, is happy to pitch in. We will be gifting her with gift cards and homemade cookies or whatever she prefers. Pumpkin bread? Tis the season.
DeleteCongratulations! I adore the group photo with the judge's smiling face in the background. I've gotten choked up lately, but by the neighbor's fire pit smoke not emotions. 😒
ReplyDeleteAlly - It is a cute pic and he really was a wonderful judge. He had some kind words to say, like I know there was much that went into today and the court is just giving a stamp approval on the work you've already done. Fire pit choked up - be carful out there.
DeleteCONGRATULATIONS
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOMG--The group photo is so wonderful. And the girls look like they could have been yours by birth (not that that's something that matters, but wow). I love this whole story, and the banner is awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific, loving, massive turnout for the adoption. The girls have to feel loved, supported, and so very part of something larger than themselves. I hope the whole thing made a big impression on Kay. It sure did on me!
Nance - Thank you so much. It's funny, but the girls do have similar coloring and they do blend in with us. I agree, it doesn't matter but it just so happens, ya know? I was thrilled that he banner worked out. I assumed I'd not allowed enough time. Walgreens was ready in about an hour. Who knew? And not cost prohibitive. With a coupon $27. There might be more banners in our near fam's near future. Something needs to be announced, let's get it on a banner.
DeleteIt was a massive turnout. The lawyer got the date request wrong and this was after we'd already changed it once, so I was like I give up. The college crew just won't be there, and when I told her that - almost verbatim, she was like OH, SHOOT. YOU DID ASK FOR A MONDAY SO KIDS COULD COME IN TOWN. LET ME ASK THE JUDGE and he granted yet another change. We weren't sure Reg would want to leave school even for less than 24 hours, because he's having a great time- but I begged. He got a haircut out of the deal too. I'm hoping it made a big impact on Kay too. Rae was a teary mess. Happy tears.
The banner and poem are such nice thoughtful touches! You know how to make your kids feel special and loved. Congrats on adding two more to your bunch!!!
ReplyDeleteColleen - Thank you. I kept trying to figure out how to just drive home to the same old house and act like Here we are, and the banner felt like it would be sort of celebratory. The poem - I do enjoy a poem. This one was a fraction of the length of my Christmas poems.
DeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see all the smiling faces! Even the Zoom attendees are sort of in the picture!
I'm glad it worked out for the college kids to come in for the day and and for a few of the girls' friends to be able to miss a morning of school to come. I'm sure Rae and Kay were surprised that so many people showed up to witness this special moment!
I would have looked for more random stuff in the garage to stack under the ladder! Maybe duck tape some wrenches or hammers to the ladder legs to make it taller. I should not be left in charge of such projects. lol
Also, if it's not too nosy to ask, did Kay change the spelling of her name? I thought it was something similar but slightly different, but maybe I'm thinking of someone else?
DeleteJenny in WV - Ha. I thought the same thing - oh, the zoom people are in the background. It was really great that the school friends came. I assumed that since school was in session it would be a deal breaker. The mom of one of the girls who attended was herself adopted as an infant from China so she was all about it. She even asked if she could share the photo from court with her adoptive mom. It was so sweet. I'm chuckling at the things you would've added to the ladder. We are resourceful - that's what we are.
DeleteGood eye. Yes, Kay used to spell her name different. It took some doing but I asked her to spell it the same way my grandma spelled her full name, and that meant we could hop on a traditional spelling of Kay. Her new middle name is Coach's mom's name. Rae took my middle name (my aunt in the pink jacket's name) as her middle name. My aunt has not had an easy life - lost her daughter at 35 in a car accident just weeks after her divorce was finalized from a lunatic, and the kids' father Mr. Lunatic, cut off contact with her. Her husband, my uncle, died young too. I pointed out to Rae that my aunt is resilient too, and Rae got on board with that. She wrote Aunt a letter to tell her why she was taking her name (plus they both have a great sense of humor) and Aunt said she wept. It was a very sweet letter. If Kay didn't change her name, I told her I'd have to start spelling my name Air . . . (you get where I'm going with that, right?)
That is really cool that the girls both picked family names for a new middle name!
DeleteWhat a momentous occasion for EVERYONE. I'm so glad all the older siblings were able to make it home. I'm sure there will be many bumpy moments ahead (as there always are in parenting), but what a blessing for those girls to know they are in a forever home and loved and cared for. I'm wishing them all the best in their future and hope they feel so much healing love in this exciting time.
ReplyDeleteElisabeth - It was a special day and we were really thrilled that the older kids all made the effort to be there. Yes, bumpy path tends to come with the territory. Hopefully the worst bits are behind us. Having a bond with a child really does make a difference when they act out or act up. Ask me how I know that. ;)
DeleteWell said. Thank you, Elisabeth. Much appreciated.
Oh Ernie! Congratulations! What an exciting and happy day for all of you! xxoo
ReplyDeleteSuzanne - Thank you. As Rae told Kay Friday night when she was in deep doo-doo, It's just a day and we've already been part of this family.
DeleteVery true, but still - it was an exciting milestone to hit. Much work lies ahead, but they know we mean business now. ;)
Congratulations to you all! The girls look like their new siblings. Wishing you all many happy adventures together x
ReplyDeleteThank you. Much appreciated.
DeleteI'd adjusted my WP settings because I was getting so much spam, but I've changed it back, so hopefully next week I won't be a problem. I can't speak for Kari.
ReplyDeleteI love this family photo, and I love that SO many people showed up in support of the girls and your family in general! Of course you drove all day to make it happen, getting all the Usual Suspects in line, but look how great it was for Kay and Rae to see who would show up for them. I love it!
Praying your dad is ok and they figure out what the issue is.
Girl, I had a good giggle at the banner, ladder, coolers, seat, etc....YOU ARE A TRIP. But also, the banner itself IS SO LOVELY!!
Ah, hmm- I think I ended up making a comment so maybe I caught it afford you un-adjusted it. 🤷♀️
DeleteThe Usual suspects- yep. And if course we can now add another chapter to the airport chronicles. Compliments of Reg being a lost soul and Mini being sharp and fast thinking. I think it meant so much that there was a crowd of support present.
They did not come up with answers for Dad and acted like Maybe it was nothing after all- but that seems unlikely. He’s frustrated and I am worried.
I’m nothing if not resourceful. Right? But hey- Coach suggested we drag a huge, heavy table in off the deck - place it in the family room, so he can change a light bulb. Now come on. I gave that a hard no.
I do think the banner turned out great. Last minute greatness- for the win! Thank you.
How lovely to see the photo! Congratulations to your whole family! My heart is filled with joy about your adoption celebration and I wish you all a lifetime of happiness!
ReplyDeleteMichelle- You are sweet. Thank you for the kind words. Thankful our faces aren’t frozen in the angry faces we wore the day before this. Fake it till you make it.
DeleteCongrats! I love the banner! And kudos to Mini for figuring out how to get the banner level! You have had quite the whirlwind of days. And it's bad timing for that camp to be rescheduled with so little warning!!
ReplyDeleteLisa- Thank you. Technically I think the volleyball pole was Coach’s idea. He did text Mini to ask for ideas. “I can’t use a can opener” girl did not offer advise.
DeleteThe camp reschedule really almost pushed me over the edge. I’ll I’ve done all week was try to set up rides and reach out to people. Annoying.
Congrats! Yay for making your family bigger and better!
ReplyDeleteI got surprisingly choked up while giving the speech at my sister's wedding. I had sort of forgotten that I was supposed to do it, so I took a few minutes in the morning to think through something and I just winged it (I'm quite used to/talented at public speaking and this wasn't a big deal for me). But then I almost started crying. I don't even really like my sister! What happened to me?
Engie - Bigger and better - I like that. Hadn't heard it put that way yet. ;)
DeleteOMG - this is cracking me up. "I don't even really like my sister! What happened to me?" I'm curious how long ago this was? Also, when organizing the many moving parts for who will watch the girls while we're away - I told my friend (her three kids grew up besties with my three bio youngest - we go way way back and she's like family but we don't see each other often unless it's b-ball season because her daughter plays on Curly's team. Our kids drifted when they went to college or high school, still friendly but not in the same group anymore) "If only I had sisters." Ha, because of course I do, but neither of them act like we are even related.
Awww, how wonderful to see you all together with big smiles... you're such wonderful people for giving these girls a home and a family!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!!! I loved the picture. Got kinda choked up reading this whole post.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! The girls are beautiful. 💜
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on having the adoption finalized, that is wonderful news! The girls probably feel just that much more stable now.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on finalizing the adoption. That is wonderful! Also I cannot keep up with everything you fit into your days and all that driving. Although I do remember the days of crazy driving, I was so glad not to have to go back to that after the pandemic because the kids were all out of school and had their licenses.
ReplyDeleteI must get used to putting my name in before I start typing. I always forget and hit publish otherwise.
DeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteOh yay! What a great photo and what a wonderful day. I am so glad that all the kids showed up. That must have been very special for the girls. Congratulations to you too! I would have cried too!
ReplyDeleteKyria - The family photos did turn out really nice. I think it meant the world that the older kids arranged it so that they could be there. Thank you. Ha, another mom who came (mom of one of the girl's friends) told me "It's fine - I planned to cry today at 10 am anyway."
DeleteI love that all of your kids and so many of your family members showed up for the girls. They are so lucky to be a part of your awesome family!!
ReplyDeleteBeth - It was great that all of the older kids jumped thru hoops to be there. I assumed that wouldn't happen once it was not gonna happen in the summer. Thank you.
