8 is Enough Adoption Day: Timing is everything and two things are true

While you read this, I'm prepping for the courthouse to make our 'Eight is Enough' status official. Drafting this on Saturday.

Friday - yesterday, I had the day off. My ten hours of sleep were bought to me by Thursday's allergy shots, thank you very much. Turns out I needed that kind of sleep under my belt to stomach tricks from our friend, Kay.

Coach and I used a gift card to grab food and drinks from a place in a cute town along the train line. Tank met us there. He arrived earlier than we expected and sort of crashed our date, but he's a great addition to any gathering, so it was great.

On the way home, I pointed as we turned off of the expressway near our home by a Shell Station.

Me:  hey, that's our kid. (I'd had one apparently strong Skinny Marg and felt tipsy, Coach was driving obvi).

Coach:  Huh?

Me:  Yep, that's Kay.

The girls have therapy after school on Fridays and it's an amazing break for us. We can decompress and have a short date before they get home. Curly agreed to be home by 6:35 pm to feed them dinner. We got home around 7:15.

Kay and Rae walked in. We were ready, planning to divide and conquer. I asked what Kay was doing at the gas station. "Just walking -wasn't at the gas station." Curly had sent them outside to get some exercise because she had to pack for a v-ball overnight, and couldn't watch them in the house. Kay was wearing crocs - not the usual if working out. I asked why, "I couldn't get my shoes untied."

Inventive? Me thinks not. *I told my dad today that while we all attend the block party she will be inside tying and untying her shoes 500 times. I feared with the amount of laughing that ensued that I might've killed him. Kay later admitted the shoe tie thing was a lie. Shock.

Me to Rae, who I followed to their room:  Were you at the gas station too?

Rae:  No, I tried to go into the church to sit in the chapel, but I guess it closes at 3.

Me:  Did Kay have money with her?

Rae:  Yea she did and I told her not to go to the gas station but she did anyway.

I pounded thru the kitchen and into the yard where Coach was hitting a volleyball with Kay. He later said, I knew something was up when I saw your walk.

Me:  Give me the money. Claimed she didn't have any, over and over. (I keep their money in an envelope in my room because we've had issues with spending habits and sneaking off across busy roads to get to Starbucks) Rae told me you have it, so if you walked in the house and stuck it in the mudroom go get it.

She got the $17 from her mudroom locker, and I asked her where she got it. She claims she kept money hidden when I took their money over a year ago. She said that at fam therapy the other day when I said I'd found $6 in her room. She kept $6 hidden all this time? Doubt it. Six was the change from a bigger bill she must've spent.

I sent her to her room. Rae was up there. Kay hollered at Rae for telling us.

Kay:  You used to keep my secrets

Rae:  Yeah, I don't do that anymore. I've grown and matured and you need to figure it out. This is a you problem, not a them problem.

Kay:  They'll cancel the adoption. I only have three days to fix this.

Rae:  No, they're not cancelling. Monday's just a day, and you've been part of this family for over two years. Like when you started writing Shenanigan on your papers at school. It's gonna take more than 3 days to fix this. You have to stop living in the past. You talk about the past like at least once a week. Those people weren't good for us. This is a family and you need to decide to be part of it and stop all this stuff you do.

Kay:  I don't wanna be adopted in a family with two people I don't like. (Curly was in her room and heard every word and she said 100% it's Curly and I that Kay 'doesn't like.')

Rae:  It's not that you don't like them, it's that you don't like it when they get mad at you, so stop doing dumb things. This is on you.

Kay:  At fam therapy they compared me to you and you're just doing better because you're older. (they're only 17 mos apart).

Rae:  No, I was the same as you when we got here. I was sneaking and lying and being bad, but I've grown up. You can do it too, but you're choosing not to.

Coach and I stood in the front hall, chins on the floor. Blown away by Rae's advice. We could all hear every word - their door was open and they were loud. We were so impressed with Rae. I knew she got it, but the extent to which she gets it was really mind blowing. (Rae did mess up last week with the clothing thing, but it was clear then that she was really sorry).

Rae came down to the kitchen and Curly popped downstairs, and beckoned to her. "Rae, come here." Curly took her up to her room, where she told her that she overheard everything and that she thought Rae did a great job and that she was really proud of her.

Guess what? No amount of me and Coach saying good job to Rae could outweigh Curly saying it. And I didn't ask Curly to do that. It was pure and authentic and natural. We wonder if Kay hearing Rae tell her to get with the program might matter.

So two things are true:  The night sucked, but it was also amazing.

Rest assured:  no one was actually decapitated in the drafting of this post.

I was awake half the night, because I fear Kay has been opening various drawers in the kitchen and helping herself to caddies' cash. There's one drawer per kid just outside the mudroom, older kids' drawers have been reassigned as they move out. Caddies often drop their cash in their drawer. Game changer in the 11th hour. Stealing cash money? Walking to a gas station to buy yourself shit food? (The kids have cash boxes with keys in their bedrooms that they used when the girls first moved in and we can go back to that system, but the drop $ in drawer bit is convenient).

Kay's spending the weekend in her room. Friday night most of us went and enjoyed an ice cream treat - Rae got to choose the place, Culvers.

In our Culvers' booth, Rae told Curly:  I got my volleyball jersey today. I picked number 21.

#21 is Reg and Curly's number. There's significance with our last name and some rapper that makes us laugh.

Curly beamed at her:  Nice!

On the way home, Rae asked Tank:  Are you home just to caddy, or are you working on Monday?

Tank:  I'm working Monday. Why is something happening Monday?

Did I tell Coach that I wanted to call the lawyer and cancel? You betcha. I'm drained. But we're soldiering on. I'll be on a call with the fam therapist, Katlyn, on Sunday while I'm on my way to pick up my funny kid from ND. Coach will be on the call on his way back from golfing with a few of the guys. Tank had a booze cruise in the city Sunday,. He has a friend who works on a boat (Came back to add this photo on Sunday).

Who is old enough to remember the show Eight is Enough?

  1. I'm certainly old enough to remember that show! I don't know if I I watched it though; I had an early bedtime
This is completely unsolicited advice, but find a new way to organize caddy cash. I remember when one kid ( was it Mini?) had mucho dinero scattered in her room. Loose cash is just not secure. Get banks or lock box if they need to keep that much cash around. Remove the temptation. ( Let alone that other people who might come to your house might rifle through the drawers.)
My prayers for your today. It's not okay what she did, but you know why she acts this way, so keep giving her the structure she needs. And therapy!
St William of Perth, St Thomas More, and St Joseph, please pray that the Shenanigans have a successful adoption and that Kay can learn to follow the rules- not out of meanness, but because it's good for her growth and safety. Also pray for Rae as she enters into the new era Amen.

    1. And the darker blue dress does look great in the photo! The darker shorts and men's short help it all blend together. You did a great job of coordinating this!

    2. mbmom11 - I appreciate the advice and that's the overall plan. I bought all the kids lock box/cash boxes years ago. After talking to her, I don't think she was taking money from the caddies. She explained where she got the money (after first telling a lie) - it included going into my room and finding where I stash the money they get from birthday cards, etc. Not acceptable but not as bad as taking the money from caddies. She hasn't been out buying Lulu Lemon clothes or any large items that would've raised an eyebrow. I think the caddies will rethink dropping their money in those drawers though after this recent issue.

Thank you for the prayers. I spoke to her individual therapist today - which is rare. So much easier than emailing her, so hoping that sharing what's happening with her will help her address it.

Thanks for the compliments on the photo. My hair looked great when I left the house but the humidity was unreal and my hair looks silly in the photos. :(

  2. I remember Eight is Enough. I thought it was insipid, but I know it was popular. Love that praise from Curly gets through. Hoping your Monday is the best ever. Congrats.

    1. Ally - It probably was insipid. I used to enjoy it when I was young. It'll come as no surprise that I enjoyed watching all the siblings interact with one another. Their house was always hectic. Lots of coming and going. Ha. Thank you. We had a very nice day. A huge crowd at the ceremony. A lovely breakfast afterwards.

  3. I do remember Eight is Enough, but I wasn't a huge fan of the show. It seemed like a rip off of the Brady Bunch to me. I'm sorry about the Kay situation. It sounds very difficult. I hope today goes well!

    1. Bijoux - A rip off of Brady Bunch - yeah, I can see that. Like Brady Bunch with 'real' issues, like next level stuff. Ha. Kay's situation is frustrating, but I'm hoping that this might've been like a break thru - seeing that she's holding on to the past, etc. Eyes opened - really cannot trust her at all. Monday was smooth sailing. The girls were touched by the people who showed up to support them, etc.

  4. I used to watch Eight Is Enough religiously and had favourite characters. Not too long ago, I found it on a streaming channel and tried watching it again. Yikes! It did not age well at all.

I'm sorry that this transition is so difficult with Kay. And disappointing. Sometimes, I think it's hard for certain personalities to do what's best for themselves. Maybe she thinks she's betraying people in her past; maybe she thinks she's saying that whatever and whoever she used to be was entirely a waste; maybe she feels like this rebellion is keeping her self from being completely lost. I don't know. But of course it's inexcusable to lie and steal, no matter what. The fact that her sister Rae is telling her that it's immature and wrong is big.

I'd like to echo mbmon11 above about removing temptation and securing money. That's just common sense.

    1. Nance - Same! I rewatched it on some weird channel before cable back when I would sit on the couch and nurse Reg during older guys' nap time. It was so funny to watch from a different age.

You're right - there could be so many reasons for her behavior. I do think that now that we overheard this convo between sisters - we sort of know a bit more about what's happening. Lots more ground to cover in therapy.

Not leaving money in kitchen drawers is common sense. My caddies come in the house and I think all they want to do is eat and cool off, but this was eye opening. They have cash boxes in their rooms, so this was not a failed system - it was a failed follow thru and I think they will all be a bit more aware.

  5. I've never seen Eight is Enough. I guess it wasn't rerun on a channel that we regularly watched.
Good on Rae for pointing things out to Kay! I hope her words are the encouragement for positive change!
One of the things that really surprised me on my visit to Chicago last summer was how pretty Lake Michigan and the river are! Tank's boat trip sounds like a great way to enjoy it!
I hope everything goes good at the courthouse today. I'll be thinking of you all!

  6. Oh, I remember Eight Is Enough! It was never a favorite, but hey, I liked it enough to watch it.

Congrats on reaching the day for you to become that in reality. I'm sorry that Kay is still having trouble, but WOW on Rae, good for her!

Thank you. Yes, good for Rae. Her perspective might influence Kay. Fingers crossed.

  7. Eight is Enough premiered before I was born, so there's that. I don't remember watching it in reruns like we watched Three's Company or Taxi.

Yikes with the lying and the money stealing. I believe Kay will come around with her sisters' help.
Praying that everything goes a bit smoother after this big step.

I love the family photo---the shades of blue with white was GENIUS!!

    1. Suz - We so hope that Rae calling her out on her shit might shake her into a realization phase - time to move on and address this stuff. Thank you for the prayers. Would you believe my dad landed in the hospital Monday evening - while I was on my way to drive Mini back to school? He had some blood in his stool. Being released today. Talk about timing.

Thank you. I do think the fam photos turned out great. Aside from my hair - took a high humidity hit and it doesn't look great, but it's fine.

  11. Even if you have mixed feelings going into this with this weekend’s events… congratulations!!! It’s a big step and hopefully the knowledge that she’s here to stay and yours forever will help Kay to settle in fully and to be a full fledged Shenanigan in spirit as well as legality! Best wishes for you all and thanks for sharing this journey with us all, both the rewarding and frustrating parts.

  14. Sending you so much love and prayers! And also empathy for the terrible timing of Kay's reaction. I have to think that Rae's conversation with her will help shift her perspective a little bit. The impulsivity and constantly testing the boundaries are so common with childhood trauma but it doesn't make it any less frustrating in the moment, especially when you were feeling like you were past a lot of that acting out. I do wonder if she has been harboring a fear that you won't ACTUALLY go through with the adoption and so she self-sabotages because it's less painful to think "they won't adopt me because of this bad thing I did" rather than "they won't adopt me because they don't want ME". And hoping beyond hope that with the adoption actually going through, she finds some healing and peace.

    2. Kate - We so hope that there is a shift in Kay thanks to Rae. Who knew that was ever going to be a factor here? If you'd have told me that back in the day? I would never have believed it. NEVER. But here we are. I do know that this is not uncommon for trauma. It is par for the course. It's just so blatant to be caught, to apologize, and to do the same exact things - like WHAT? I wonder the same thing - like maybe she was trying to sabotage things. That would align with RAD, which we had her tested for, because that was totally the deal with Hay and Day. I do think even without RAD, she could still just wonder if maybe they'll send me back to my mom if I screw this up? All good points. I had a phone call today with her individual therapist and Kay didn't even mention the other crap that happened last week when she was there. I told her no need to beat around the bush - I'll let Kay know that we spoke and that this is a hot topic. Thanks for sharing your insight. Your support is appreciated.

  16. I also remember 8 is enough!

Bad timing for Kay to act up. Maybe she’s doing this to see if it will result in your guys changing your minds about the adoption? Like she’s trying to test how committed you are to the adoption. But who even knows. It’s so very annoying to deal with and the timing is awful. But I hope Monday was a joyful day for all of you!

    1. Lisa- I agree, the adoption approaching could have something to do with it- but she really has been acting this way for so so long. It just so happens that we caught her more recently. Some of the stuff she took was from months ago. It was bad timing but we sat her down Sunday night and gave her a talk and we did not mince words. Basically: we have shown up for you from day 1. No one else in your life has. We’re doing all the work here. You wanna be part of this family? (A question asked - while all 6 older bio subs were milling around in the kitchen steps away. . . And I pointed out that they all showed up for her, leaving school and work to be there, so exhibit A). She said she does want to be part of the family and I told her I think Rae said it best when she said XYZthe other night and she needs to do her part. We had a great day Monday. They were tickled by all the folks who showed up to be there for them.

  17. I hope everything went smoothly from then on, and CONGRATULATIONS! This has been a long time coming, and I'm sure it will make a difference for the girls and you all. Some kids are just more impulsive. We had a terrible time with our son for a few years, with stealing, putting things on our credit card, but we came through in the end, and he is not a delinquent. He still has problems with impulsive spending because of his ADHD, but he only ever spends his own money. It's so amazing that Rae was able to talk Kaye through some of it, and hopefully, she will improve as she matures and feels secure in her place in your family.

    1. Melissa- it was amazing that Rae told her how things are and how she ‘gets it’. That was huge. We do hope Katie starts to get with the program. Impulsivity is exhausting and your story of your son is all too familiar. We dealt with a lot of nonsense with Lad. He had our cc in college for books and emergencies. Whoa Nelly, he really abused that and it was eye opening for us. It was bad timing for us to catch Kay red handed but I do hope that it was sort of a turning point. Monday was joyful and fun. It was easier to stomach the nonsense because for that day we were focused so much on the big picture. It has been a long bumpy path. Thank you.
