I'm pausing my daycare update to share the latest happenings in Shenanigan Central Vomit Ville.
Coach started puking Thursday the 21st in the middle of the night. I woke up unaware that he'd been sick. He'd still gone to work, texting me to say he'd be home soon as he'd been up all night puking.
I was angry, because:
1. before school the girls had used the first floor bathroom where he'd puked and it hadn't been properly cleaned.
2. I text-SHOUTED that he shouldn't have gone to work. He said he 'had to'. Maybe he had the key? Don't know/don't care - that's irresponsible. Duh.
I try to steer clear of cleaning house, doing laundry, and cooking on my day off . . . but I tackled the bathroom/made an exception.
This bug knocked him out: weak, sleepy, and no appetite all weekend.

| Ed Grimley from Tenor |
Not sure how, but I stood up, cradling her, maintaining a C curve (do you remember the SNL skit with Martin Short as Ed Grimley - that's the posture) as I took a few steps to the kitchen. I set her down, releasing the river of milk that I'd been cupping with my body by squeezing my elbows tight to my sides and practicing the terrible posture that my mom scolded me for EVERY DAY OF MY FORMATIVE YEARS (bitter? me?).

| Maybe this is too gross to post, but it's basically spilled milk. MG Google: note the socks! |
I opened all the windows, bathed the baby, washed half of the kitchen floor and warned the parents at pickup to be on guard. Then around 7:30 pm, Kay puked. She didn't make it to the bathroom, and Coach cleaned up the carpet in the girls' room.
I alerted my people that Kay was throwing up. One mom is due to have a baby this week (see: daycare 'crowd'), and she and another mom kept their kids home the next day as a precaution. For a minute the next morning, I thought HEY NO MORNING NAPPERS, WE CAN GO TO THE ZOO OR SOMETHING. Then I remembered that I had a sick 12 year old hanging in her room.
Thursday night, I was on my way home from book club. Curly called me: SO, I JUST THREW UP. Dang nab it! She had Friday off of school.
For weeks, I toyed with the idea of she and I flying to Florida that 3-day weekend because we could use some sunshine. But the end of the b-ball season was unknown. Hers ended sooner than it should've. (Hmm, will I write a post about the frustrations with this season and the lousy coach? Do people want to hear me vent?) Last minute flights were crazy pricey. Me: Well - good thing we aren't flying somewhere in the morning.
Will I stay vomit-free? If I avoid this, that'll count as a major February FIG. (Elisabeth has urged blog friends to count their FIGs: find joy in gratitude).
***I drafted this on Friday, editing to add: Coach and I drove to Indiana to watch Reg's last basketball game. On the way we stopped for dinner. I voted for Mexican. Talk about a roll of the dice . . . and? I didn't catch the bug. Hooray!
I admit that while I didn't record all of my gratitude moments in Feb, I was more aware of them and what a great habit that is to get into.
My favorite FIG (I'll share a few in my next post. Who knew puke-talk could lead to such a high word count?):
* Mini called Thursday - the night before her spring break flight. We talked thru issues: boarding pass that wouldn't download and then it did, and Me: it's FINE if they charge you for a checked bag . She was bringing a small backpack as a carryon for the week -stuffing it to the gills. My heart stopped when she called me at 2 am her time (she wasn't sleeping). I fumbled around for my notes from the session I had with her anxiety therapist. I told her it's time to sleep, a thought is just a thought and everything (missing a flight, etc) is solvable, we hung up and I was SO EXCITED in the am to get a text saying she'd gone right to sleep after our talk. Sleeping 4.5 hours (she's literally been awake the entire night a few times before travelling because anxiety is a bitch). Hooray for sleeping!

Have you had most family members gone down with a stomach bug, but one who stood strong and avoided it? (asking for a friend) Are you a fan of SNL? If so do you have a favorite skit?

When we have a stomach bug. , we go down like dominos- one after the other. If we're lucky, one adult will hang on until the end.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch much SNL- just some YouTube clips. I can't stay up that late!
mbmom11 - When the kids were little, I remember being shocked when we didn't ALL get it. It was a fierce bug and I'm so glad I dodged it. We rarely watch SNL lately, but back when I was younger - I loved it. I think back in the day of 'In a van down by the river' with Chris Farley were my fav skits.
DeleteNo stomach illnesses here lately, but if there is one around you can count on me to get. I haven't watched SNL in years. It's on too late for me.
ReplyDeleteAlly - I've had it a few times when no one else did - so maybe I've had this recent strand. We don't watch SNL anymore - but we enjoyed it back when we were young and able to stay up late.
DeleteStomach flu is the WORST and I extend my sympathies. When Middle Child was in kindergarten, she got the rotavirus (I think there’s a vaccine for it now) and wound up in the hospital for a week for severe dehydration. My oldest had already had it. I kept expecting my son, my husband and me to get it, but we never did. It was a miracle.
ReplyDeletePhil Hartman as Bill Clinton at McDonald’s is one of my faves.
Bijoux - Oh man. That sounds so awful. Kindergarten? Poor baby. I don't remember Bill Clinton at McDonald's.
DeleteMy entire family LOVED Ed Grimley. I loved all of Belushi's Samurai characters, too. Hilarious.
ReplyDeleteStomach viruses are so awful. I remember when one went through our family all at once. The four of us just couldn't do a thing but try and make it to the bathroom and then back to bed/the couch. At one point we lost the tv remote and didn't have the strength to find it. We were on PBS and it seemed like it was All Elmo All The Time.
Nance - The older skits on SNL are my favorite. We always loved anything with Chris Farley. 'IN a van down by the river' - so funny.
DeleteAll Elmo All The Time - oh no! Once when Ed was a year old, Coach, Lad, and I all had a stomach bug. We were worthless and Ed was full of energy and hungry. I finally put all the chairs on top of the kitchen table so he couldn't climb onto the table and cleared the bookshelves of their books so he could reach them and then we all laid on the couches and watched him play. It was awful.
I hope by now all the puke has passed and you have escaped unscathed!
ReplyDeleteI've never been a regular SNL watcher, but I do occasionally see some clips on YouTube. The Jeopardy skits are my favorite!
Jenny in WV - The puke seems to have passed (knocking on wood). Oh, yes. The Jeopardy skits are always a hoot. Will Ferrell is a master of comedy.
DeleteHow fun to see the socks....next to the "milk"! Ha! Ha! That totally cracked me up! At least your feet were looking good!
ReplyDeleteI'm always the one who gets the stomach bug in our house.
I sometimes watch YouTube clips of SNL. I tend to like the funny commercials and music parodies best. My favorite SNL time was when Dana Carvey was there.
Michelle - Hee hee. I thought you'd get a chuckle out of the socks making another appearance. Dana Carvey skits were classic.
DeleteMy youngest got hit with the flu not too long ago, and it was bad (the puking as well as the coughing and wheezing), and of course, she spread it. The oldest missed the flu, but got covid, again. My husband and I both got the flu, but I had been vaccinated this year, and my case was pretty mild. I am not sure if my husband's case was truly bad, or if it was just exaggerated by the ManFlu.
ReplyDeleteKara - No! That sounds brutal. The ManFlu. I hadn't heard that phrase. So true.
DeleteNorovirus is THE worst. You’re usually so sick-resistant, probably because you’re around kids all the time—your immune system must be iron-clad! I hope everything is still going well at home. Fingers (and stomachs) crossed. š
ReplyDeleteFave SNL skit (I have many): google Will Forte Payton Manning locker room dance.
Kari - I'm wondering if my system has built up an immunity because I've been exposed to so much. We haven't had any other cases crop up. Thank goodness.
DeleteI'm unfamiliar with that skit. I should go check it out on YouTube.
Oh Ernie. Not the stomach bug. Noooo. We all five had it last week. Will pray if leaves. Casa Shenanigans quickly! Ps this is joymariecooks. Not sure why it’s saying I’m anon
ReplyDeleteNot be smug, but we do not get the stomach flu around here. I have a stomach of steel and my husband has OCD about washing hands and doesn't eat food, so...It really helps that we rarely come into contact with anyone under the age of 18.
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone in your household feels better ASAP!!
Engie - Look at you. Not smug - lucky. I think you are doing so many things right. I can't really help hanging with the under 18 crowd. ;) As of now, we are all healthy. Spring is coming!
DeleteI died picturing you walking like that, holding onto ALL the vomit with your body. Dang---poor baby, poor Coach, poor Kay, poor Curly! I'm so happy you remained healthy----that's a Godsend!
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone has been feeling better. I do love the old SNL skits!!
Suz - It was no easy feat to move from the couch to the kitchen and not drip (much). It was so gross. My workout pants were plastered to my legs. Ick. I'm glad that I didn't go down the ship. Fingers crossed we don't have any more cases crop up. The old SNL skits are so great. How about Mark Katherine Gallagher? Hee hee.
DeleteOh dear. Playing vomit dominoes is awful. Glad you managed to avoid it.
ReplyDeleteSuzanne - It sure is. I don't think I've wiped down the counters so much since covid.
DeleteDecember we accidentally spread norovirus to 4 other families. Wednesday, my youngest (1st grade) woke up in the middle of the night throwing up. Got him cleaned up, practiced good hand hygiene and thought nothing of it. Figured it was a run of the mill GI bug. He stayed home Thursday and had no other issues. Friday everyone returns to school and family and friends start arriving for my oldest’s 1st communion celebration. Friday, I get sick as does my oldest. House is deep cleaned. Saturday, everyone is feeling ok. We go ahead with 1st communion and the party at our house. Sunday: wake up to 3 guests having gotten sick over night. Quickly send other company home including my 97year old grandmother. Over the next few days, 4 additional people got sick. Grand total: 11 people in 5 families from 5 cities and 2 states got sick (that we know of). Thankfully neither my mom or grandmother was one of them. I felt horrible about the whole situation.
ReplyDeleteJennifer - Oh my gosh. That's an epic family gathering. So sorry. The day Reg made his first communion we came home from mass and while we got ready for the party we were hosting, he started puking his guts out. He spent the whole party up in my room watching the Sand Lot while puking.
DeleteWe are living parallel lives unfortunately as a stomach bug swept through our house like a slow-moving train but I somehow managed to avoid it. It's been a week since our youngest had it so I think I can say I am in the clear. I don't know how I avoided it since I'm on immune suppressant drugs to treat my RA but thank the Lord I did not have to add that to my list of woes. Phil is convinced I was patient zero because I threw up in my hotel room in NJ on Feb 10th but I think I threw up from nausea from my sinuses draining in my stomach (a symptoms I've always had when I had sinus infections in the past). And I only threw up once - he was so so so sick and didn't get his appetite back for 3-5 days! Paul was more sick, but Phil was the most sick. I can't believe Coach went to work after puking! No one wants to see their PT if he's been puking!!!
ReplyDeleteI have had the experience of an incredible volume of milk coming right back up. It feels like they are puking a gallon of milk! It happened a couple of times with Will when I was breast feeding. He'd empty me and then cough and up it would all come!! Bleh! I do NOT miss those days!
Lisa - We ARE living parallel lives. I've been reading your blog and feeling so seen. Goodness it is the pits. And Coach had the same issue as Phil. He was so sick and it took so long for him to bounce back. He lost 5 pounds and he really cannot afford to lost any weight. He had no energy for days after in addition to the no appetite. If I'd been awake, I would've taken the keys from him - I was so upset that he went to work. What?
DeleteIt's so sad when a baby pukes. They are so confused. This baby never got upset. She was in such a good mood all day. I was so surprised that she was ill.
What a crazy week you had! Glad you didn't get sick! We visited family in San Diego one summer, had a picnic at a park and that night (we were in a hotel) both girls got sick. Chuck and I were up for hours, me with them in the bathroom and he was getting hair ties, clean pajamas. Just as the girls were hearing the end and falling asleep, Chuck ran to the bathroom. I was up the rest of the night with him. Only by the grace of God I never got sick!!
ReplyDeleteCindy - That sounds awful. In California on vacation no less. I've had a hotel puke fest - it was unreal and I felt so trapped. Mini got sick (and she was the only one) during the night while I was in a hotel with Ed, Tank, Mini, and maybe Reg? By myself. I was stuck in the bathroom all night. She puked every seven minutes or something ungodly. I thought I was gonna have to take her to an ER or something. WE were in St. Louis for an Irish music competition. My SIL got us some Gatorade in the morning. She's also a doctor, so she was advising me. Mini managed to compete in her fiddle competition and I stood behind the judge with a plastic bag - just in case. The worst. I had to drive 5 hours home that day after having only slept like 2 hours.
DeleteUg, puke! I (KNOCK ON WOOD) have not had a puke illness in a very long time. However, after basically a year last year with only one cold, I have started 2025 with a nasty one, probably because I flew three times in 10 days. It seems that flying always is a sickness crapshoot. So I have not been sleeping well due to stuffiness and snot, but luckily it is clearing up and there has been no puke. I feel for Mini, as I remember the first time I traveled on my own abroad and it was a S-show. I made it though and she will get more comfortable with all of the things, but I love that she calls you for advice still; that is a good sign, even if it is annoying at times. :)
ReplyDeleteKyria - Oh no. A bad cold is the worst. It's hard to sleep and that impacts everything. While traveling - that's so hard. Yes, flights have a tendency to be germ fests. Mini has really had a tough time, but she seems to be figuring out how to use the exercises the therapist taught her. I don't find her calls annoying right now, because when she calls me in the middle of the night where she is - it's dinner time here. I'm so excited to see her in three weeks!
DeleteOne Thanksgiving, I worked 2 12 hour days (Thurs/Fri) then was scheduled for 2 12 hour nights (Sat/Sun). Well, norovirus took down the nurses like dominoes. I thought I'd avoided it but went out to dinner Friday night with a friend. To a bar. And ate...nachos. Worst. Stomach. Bug. Ever. I live in fear of norovirus every year. Glad you avoided it... you must have an immune system of steel after all these years of being around kids of all ages.
