Last month was the end of the line as far as my patience and T-Family mobile goes. We get our phones through Walmart. I'd rank it with a half star, if anyone asked.
In general the functioning of the plan/phone service has been fine. I was going to say the service has been fine, but reworded that lest I lead you to believe that their customer service is at all acceptable. Remember when they claimed they couldn't prorate our monthly bill in order to upgrade Reg and Mini's phones? Preposterous.
I'm guessing you recall: Reg's phone stopped working except when he was in WIFI, which messed up life in general but really impacted the lease signing, moving into the apartment portion of our Labor Day. I shudder when I think of that stressful mess.
After he moved into the apt, Reg called T-Family Mobile's 1-800 number. Coach may have been on the call too. I'd bowed out of all things phone-related after I'd given more of my time and energy to the move in process than I care to admit.
They told Reg he needed a new SIM card. Get one powered by Verizon, they said. Reg went to the store, and no one knew how to locate a SIM care powered by Verizon. Having recovered from my frustration, I helped him select one online at home, and he picked it up the next day.
This might shock you. It didn't work.
Now he was driving to another state on the regular, and I was worried how that would go without access to GPS, phone calls, etc. Without WIFI, the phone was useless. He assured me he knew where he was going. He'd done the drive a number of times.
On Tuesday after Labor Day, I called Walmart a few minutes before Reg was due home. He'd spent one day in Indiana, but had to come home for a neurology appointment.
Me: I summed things up, adding: He's been to the store three times in the last week and no one knows what to do. I'm coming to the store in a few minutes with him and his phone. Will there be someone that knows something about phones who can help us?
This guy was leaving for the day. Of course he was, because I'd just spilled the beans to him. He gave me the name of another guy who should know what to do. The other guy's name was Reg. (so not really 'Reg', but he has the same name as my IRL son. I took that as a sign. Not sure if it was a good sign, but at any rate . . . ).
The two Regs. I'm not
pictured here, because I
was busy gnawing off my own arm, so
overcome with hunger that I'd
lost my everlasting mind.
Walmart Reg knew a thing or two. He was like Why a Verizon SIM? Then he selected a SIM that would work. *Here's the Cliff Notes version, because we were there for almost 2 hours. I like you too much to bore you with the details.*
The other SIM card he sold us ALSO did not work, although it should've. Walmart Reg stayed on with the world's most incompetent customer service people trying to figure it out while we all grew old . . . well, I was beyond hungry and I do think the process shaved a few years off my life.
At long last after Walmart Reg said This should work. I don't understand, a few dozen times, I called Uncle.
Me: Reg that's it. We're buying you a new phone.
Walmart Reg showed my Reg to the phone selection. He sort of wanted an iPhone. They were a bit more expensive than the android options.
Me: You want an iPhone? Grab one. I DO.NOT.CARE. how expensive. Let's do this.
Walmart Reg set up the new phone. I tried to return the SIM card or whatever that we'd determined wouldn't work, but that had to be done at customer service. Or course it did. The only additional line I was gonna wait in was one that would feed me something that would boost my blood sugar, so I told Reg he could return that later.
Walmart Reg apologized for all the issues. It made no sense to him. "Sorry you had to get a new phone and that the only iPhone we had was sort of pricey."
Me: Well, I would've dropped a thousand bucks on this damn counter if it meant we could get outta here, so I count this as a reasonably priced alternative. Thanks for your help.
A few weeks later, I told Reg when he came home for the weekend to take the 'stuff' back to Walmart to return it. He called me. Um, They won't take it back, because it's been more than 10 days.
Oh, yeah. That's not happening. I drove to the world's worst store AGAIN a few days later. I'd called customer service to let them know I was coming and to let them know that they were 100% gonna be refunding me my money. The end. I marched in, found the guy I spoke to and he returned it.
Mini gets the absolute worst service while at school. She may as well be abroad this semester, because I rarely get to speak to her. Delilah always hears her own echo when she calls me. My phone still likes to insert '?' between most words. I've held off so long to replace my phone, because I was on the fence about buying an iPhone. I really think I'm gonna stick with an Android. Regardless, a new service sounds dreamy.
All this to say, the time has come. I'm not sure what service we are switching to, and I hope we can keep our phone numbers, but peace out T-Family Mobile. I think I'll tackle this when Mini is home in a few weeks for fall break. The bonus will be that her phone will work while abroad. And my phone will work while I'm visiting her abroad, because I am banking on that happening.
Anyone have a carrier they think I should consider? Whose customer service (doesn't have to be limited to phones) is the worst?

What a nightmare. It should be easy. Glad you're going to get a new plan somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteI have no suggestions, as I use tracfone, which really isnt a good idea if you use your phone a lot. Great customer service everytime I contact them, though my son had a bad experience lately. ( I think his phone wouldn't text anymore? So he had me waiting for texts from tracfone and emailing him codes at school. It took 2 days at different shifts to finally get it fixed.)
Have a great and uneventful week!
mbmom11 - Tracphone - this was my first cell phone. I had a flip phone that I added minutes to for YEARS. I say I want to switch carriers, but I'm not sure if I'm up to the task of researching this change.
DeleteWhatever you do, NEVER use Boost Mobile. My son had that his first year of college (mind you, this was OSU, not the boonies) and he never got service. But the real kick in the pants was that when I had called to get the service started and gave them my credit card number, the person stole my number and ordered $200 worth of pizza from Pizza Hut. How did I know this? Well, Boost was the only thing I used that credit card for that month and the Pizza Hut was in the same Texas town of the Boost number I called. Didn’t take much detective work!
ReplyDeleteI currently have Verizon. Service is good, but customer service sucks. I’m not sure there’s any decent customer service left in America.
Bijoux - Boost Mobile, checking that off the list. (there is no list, but I'm making a mental note). That credit card story is literally bananas. But also, in the world we live in - how does that not happen more often? Customer service is not the best anywhere, it seems.
DeleteWhat a horrible mess, and I'm so sorry. I think all cell carriers have horrific customer service, judging by anyone I talk to. We've had Verizon forever and their cell service is excellent everywhere. Their actual customer service is hit or miss.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, Rick gets irritated and threatens to find a new carrier, but the amount of work involved is so daunting that he sighs and is defeated. He thinks about Consumer Cellular a lot, but he hasn't done anything beyond that.
Nance - Verizon sounds like it might work for us. I say this without finding out, Will they let us keep our phone numbers? Do I have to buy fancy-ass phones? Etc. It is a daunting task to do the research and switch things up. I plan to do it when Mini is home for a week in a few weeks and I thought we could do it then.
DeleteWe also have Verizon. The only place I have trouble w/it is in Florida. Absolute the worst service ever. Otherwise, we never have a problem. Might be more pricey than others (and that I'm not even sure of) but the peace of mind it gives knowing that it works well is enough to justify the cost.
ReplyDeleteElle - Another vote for Verizon. I do love Florida, but I don't go there very often. Unfortunately. We've skimped on phones forEVER, so it'll be hard to break out and spend more - but I feel like it's time. Plus so many of our kids are really close to graduating college and getting on their own plans, which I've heard will feel like we've gotten a raise.
DeleteI use Cricket which runs off of AT&T's towers. I had good service while in Chicago and on Amtrak through South Bend and all the way past Pittsburgh - I watched YouTube most of the way home. I've been happy with both the cell service and the customer service. I did end up being at the store for an hour and a half or so when I switched to them, but that was due mainly to wanting to keep my phone number and having previously been on a family plan that was in my mom's name. (Mom was not with my, so I had to call her a few times to get a PIN, etc to extract myself from her plan). You do have to buy your phone outright with Cricket, you might be able to reuse a phone you already own though. When I needed a new phone after a few years, the replacement process was much quicker, probably less than half an hour and they transferred all my crap (apps, contacts, background photo) to the new phone.
ReplyDeleteJenny in WV - I'm unfamiliar with Cricket, but now I'm sitting here dreaming of the day when Lad bothers to get on his own phone plan. That day might just be the day we switch as a family . . . as in, Hey Lad, it's time. He's offered to pay for his phone service, but wants to stay on our plan. Maybe just because he doesn't want the hassle.
DeleteWe used to have TMobile, but the town where we work is a TMobile dead zone, so we are now on Verizon. It's fine. It's spotty in rural Michigan, but I'm not in rural Michigan very often and it's been fine in rural Wisconsin, so mostly I say you should really look at coverage maps.
ReplyDeleteEngie - Ah, 'coverage maps' - something I hadn't considered. I can accept spotty in rural places. I've experienced that before and lived to tell about it.
DeleteWe have had Charity Mobile for forever. They run off of Verizon towers so we've never had trouble with service, but they're a small company and whenever we call, we talk to a person right away. They've always fixed any problem we've had immediately. Reasonable prices and no contracts. But your phones have to be locked for Verizon, so it may not be worth it to you if you have to buy new phones. -- Theresa C.
ReplyDeleteTheresa - Hmm. This is interesting. I've never heard of Charity Mobile. Now I need to have my teenagers explain to me what it means to have my phone locked for Verizon. Hee hee. I need a new phone for sure, and Coach is probably due too. The plot thickens.
DeleteWe have Verizon. I have no experience with any other carrier, but will say it seems to work well enough to keep me happy. Of course my cell phone needs are almost non-existent, I do not like them and avoid using mine.
ReplyDeleteAlly - I am trying to imagine life when cell phone needs are almost non-existent. I'd probably have a few offspring and a few other people who I would lose contact with completely. Verizon seems like the most popular choice. They must do a decent job. I'm not excited to look into their prices.
DeleteOh my goodness. What a nightmare. Literally. We live in Canada so have a lot fewer options and thankfully really like our carrier. For what it's worth, my BIL works for ATT and they seem to do great work and have good coverage. Of course I have no idea about price...
ReplyDeleteElisabeth- It really has been a headache lately, plus having kids study abroad has been a royal pain for them and for us. I'm not gonna lie, I'm talking a big talk about getting a new service, but cost is gonna dictate a lot of this - despite how fed up I am with T-Family Mobile.
DeleteWhat an ordeal! I just hate wasting time on direction given bet service people that don’t know what they are doing. So so frustrating!! Pat
ReplyDeletePat - It really was an ordeal. I felt confident that the guy helping us knew what he was doing and he was baffled. A new SIM card should've worked. I dislike even entering the Walmart store. PTSD.
DeleteUgh, what a headache to deal with. I hate dealing with things like phone issues because no one seems to know how to fix things and everything is just a total mystery! I've nearly always had Verizon. I tried switching to AT&T at one point but the coverage in the area was so bad that I terminated my contract and they did not fine me because of how terrible the coverage was! But that was 10+ years ago. I'll be w/ Verizon for life because I cannot imagine changing providers and dealing with all of that! So hopefully they continue to be fine to deal with.
ReplyDeleteLisa - I also live in fear of changing, but I think I live in more fear of losing my freaking mind over the Walmart conundrum. I can see how it makes sense to stay with the first company you join, because it is such a headache to figure out. I am fearful they will make us change our phone numbers.
DeleteWe have Verizon and it's been fine. Except I'm still salty that they did away with the "free" upgrades (I know they all did; but still!). Can't tell you about the customer service because (knock on wood) we haven't really had any issues with our phones.
ReplyDeleteGigi - I think free upgrades were probably never a thing with our Walmart place. Shock. Good to know you haven't had any issues. Might be worth the extra cost.
DeleteLong time reader but first time commentator. Apparently I'm passionate about quality cell service. Lol....anyways, we use Mint Mobile (the actor Ryan Reynolds is part owner). We used Republic Wireless before that but switched about two years ago to mint because it was cheaper. We're military and have been east coast, west coast and in the south without any service issues... ironically, not up in the Midwest though. We were able to keep our phone numbers.
ReplyDeleteBecca - Thanks for coming out of hiding. ;) Mint Mobile - never heard of it, but that doesn't really mean much. I do love Ryan Reynolds (so much), so maybe that will sway me. Perhaps not the best criteria for switching to a phone service, but there's a first for everything. Wow, you've really gotten around. I'm partial to the Midwest, but I bet some of the places you've been have been amazing.
DeleteWe did have two years in Michigan which we pre children and involved tailgating for Michigan football games. Now we just condition our kids to yell Go Blue at an early age. We had AT&T all the way back then, but those were the paying per text messages days!
DeleteI'm with Sarah, we all use Apple products and it makes life nice and easy. Sounds like a frustrating process.
ReplyDeleteNicole - Everyone I know who uses Apple is very loyal to Apple, but those who have Androids tend to be Apple -averse. It has been so frustrating.
DeletePhone stuff is terrible, we've had TMobile for our whole marriage (so 22 years) because it's always the cheapest plan whenever we compare. Our 13 year old has a Gabb phone which is on their plan until he's old enough to switch over. Andrew called us a few times from Europe and we got charged mega bucks because he wasn't on wifi. Like I said, all terrible.
ReplyDeleteColleen - I envy that my parents didn't have to deal with cell phone choices and bills and rules, etc. It's a headache. I have told Coach that if and when we get the foster girls phones it will be for calls and text only. No internet. So I think we have Gabb phones in our future. That's awful about the charges when Andrew called. Does he use what's app? Mini has been using What's App from Notre Dame to call us. It's the only way.
DeleteKara - If Verizon is stupid expensive, my bet is we won't end up there. Curly's phone is on a different plan. We bought her phone before we traveled abroad to see Tank, maybe. Then we used it, because it had abroad service, before we gave it to her. I wish this was more simple. That stinks that you can't use your work phone when you work from home.
ReplyDeleteSarah - ATT sounds like a big enough company that they'd have good coverage. I think the 5 oldest kids all have Apple phones now, but they bought them on their own when their older phones stopped working, or dropped into the middle of Lake Michigan, I'm looking at you, Tank. It would be nice to share things like videos without having them look like something from the early 80's.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolute insanity! I've been a Verizon girl since I got my first cell phone at 16 (when I started driving -- it was a very basic flip phone). Then when Nick and I got our own phone plan when we got married, Verizon had the best deals and we've just continued with them ever since. I can't get over the fact that two different SIM cards didn't work. It was obviously an issue with the phone setup or the phone itself.
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in Italy I got a new SIM card for my phone and had a very basic plan that was something ridiculous like 5 euro per month for unlimited text/calls within Europe and 40 GB of data per month. It didn't cover international calls so we had to do all of that over wifi/facebook messenger, etc. And actually most of the time people used WhatsApp anyway.
I do love my iphone but Nick has an android and really likes his too... hm, decisions, decisions!
Kate - decisions, decisions indeed. Thank goodness for Whats app? It is total insanity. I cannot begin to debrief you on the latest development with Walmart Family mobile - I was mistakenly calling it Walmart T Family mobile, and t family prob doesn't deserve to have their name dragged thru the mud like that. This issue that cropped up today SO IRONIC, because DID THE UNIVERSE HEAR ME BLOGGING ABOUT IT? Simply mind blowing. I cannot wait to distance myself from this phone service and will now spend the rest of my living days trying to dissuade anyone from joining them. Yep, it was THAT bad.
DeleteLook into the Verizon prepaid plan! It might not work for a big family, but it's much cheaper and we've never had cell or data issues. I don't think they advertise it, even to their own employees, because it's such a better deal. When I went in for a new phone, the guy was trying to sell us a new plan, and when we told him what we were paying, he was like, nope! That's a great deal and you should keep it. Lol
ReplyDeleteMary - Good tip. So funny that their own employee was unaware of it. Thanks.
DeleteBecca - Paying per text message days. I shudder to think of it. Tailgating at Michigan must've been amazing, pre-kids - that spells fun.
ReplyDeleteThat is beyond frustrating! And to be hungry while it's happening? That is a triple whammy. *sigh* I felt my blood pressure go up just reading this.
ReplyDeleteWe have Verizon and we have great service, most of the time. I've found their customer service to be adequate, but honestly, we don't generally need much customer service until it's time for a new phone and it's generally an easy peasy thing.
You guys with your androids...ya make me giggle. The entire world runs on apple now. LOL. Get with the program. I have one friend who insists on staying with her android and we can not send photos to each other; that right there should encourage her. 😝
Suz - I think I could manage just about anything if I have food. Feed me, damn it. Another vote for Verizon. My phone is really failing - more than usual. It will not alert me when I get a new text currently. good times. I have GOT to get a phone ASAP. I am taking your apple recommendation into consideration, but Dang, I kinda hate Apple. Hmm. Just when I think I know what I'm doing.
