A transformed group, including a speed racer; fun at the shore, & have 7 layer, will travel

The Shenanigan B & B mission trip guests arrived around dinner on the return trip Friday vs closer to 9:30 pm the week prior, so we had more time with them. There was another Creighton group that was rerouted to their same mission trip location, because their original NC destination was impacted by the hurricane. NC group stayed up crazy late and seemed more intent on having fun/goofing off than actually working. 'Our' group weren't fans, but they made the best of it.

At one point, NC couldn't find the fire pit, so they started a fire in the yard after borrowing bricks from a landscaped area. This adventure burned a hole in the grass. It put a damper on that night, as that group's leaders cancelled the reflection time for BOTH groups, and lectured both groups at length. I think there was a power trip thing happening.

One of 'our' girls got pulled over while driving. She apparently was driving behind a cop, pulled around him and passed him, while going 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. Oops. She's 4'9" and drives with her seat up close and the steering wheel lowered, and the rest of the group found her speeding-oops combined with her size to be sort of a commentary on small but mighty -or in this case small but speedy. The cop had to adjust the speed on her ticket, or she would've been arrested because driving that fast was a felony.  (this info isn't verified, but it's something I should know given I lost my license for too many speeding tickets a few years back). Speed racer took the teasing all in stride.

One of the Hawaiian girls, a freshman, admitted that she preferred having Tank drive. "He's such a good driver." Apparently everyone slept while he drove.

a blurry photo I snapped of some houses along
the Jersey Shore by roomie's house.
The best part of hosting them was noting how they’d connected. There was a different vibe the first night vs. on the return trip. They had a blast playing a board game called Code Names. Mini had just arrived home for the start of her fall break, and she played  too. After dinner, they assembled in the basement to do a reflection/hang out, and the house shook with their thunderous laughter. All in all, a great experience.

Sitting in the warmth
 of the sun was key.
Over the weekend Coach, Mini, and I stayed with Mini’s roommate’s family in NJ, and attended the ND game on Saturday at Metlife Stadium. We tailgated on a windy but beautiful day, and enjoyed adult time with Mini’s friends and their families.

Pig and Parrot - a bar on the Jersey Shore.

My 7 layer taco dip survived the trip (are we breathing a collective sigh of relief? When my luggage appeared on the belt and had no food oozing out of it, I decided we were in the clear). The friend, who'd asked Mini if my 7 layer dip travelled well, felt bad that her comment prompted me to pack it, but it was a big hit - especially after the game when everyone was done with the bagels and donuts they'd been munching all morning before the noon game.

the night before our flight
The secret, in case any of you feel daring enough to try a similar stunt:  I prepared the bottom two layers in a Gladware container (that I stuck in two freezer Ziploc bags and taped the edges together with packing tape), and brought the rest of the ingredients in double-bagged, sandwich baggies - all inside a soft-sided cooler inside my checked bag. After smoothing out the bottom layer - because the refried beans and the sour cream/cream cheese layers ‘slid’, I added the toppings Friday night when we returned from visiting a few bars on the shore. Our host, Mini's roomie's dad- who has the same first name as my Coach, owns an Irish pub in Long Branch, NJ and a trolley company. So - he drove us to a bar in his trolley.

In other news, on Thursday night I caved. I took the lower dose (10 mg) antidepressants, hoping that I'd sleep well all weekend. I wasn't sure if it would take several weeks for my body to react. When used for depression it takes 6 weeks to make a difference. Great news - it kicked in right away. I slept amazing Thursday, Friday (I was awake a touch - but I attribute that to sharing a full size bed with my Gumby sized husband), and Saturday.

I’d forgotten what it felt like to be well rested. I’m conflicted about where to go from here. For now, I'm gonna keep taking the pills. The nurse said taking them won't mess with the results of my upcoming test (small intestines photo shoot). If the 10 mg works, maybe I'll have less side effects? Hmm.

A show of hands, who's been to the Jersey Shore? Supposedly a mom and daughter trip is in the works for the summer. I'm in! Anyone do anything fun over the weekend?

  1. I lived in Jersey for part of high school and college, and few years after., and I only went to the shore twice in all that time ( years apart too!). I never took part in the shore life- too busy working and studying on the weekends! It took moving away to current location to go more to the shore when visiting family. We like state park beaches: No boardwalk or activities- just beach.
Glad you got to enjoy the shore vibe!
And you didn't cave in taking the antidepressant- you gave your body what it needed. You deserve good sleep! I know you're not fond of the side effects, but you have so much going on, I think the sleep is very important right now. Be kind to yourself. It's not selfish or sinful to get a good night's sleep. If you had an illness for which you needed antibiotics, it wouldn't be self-indulgent to take them; why is this any different?

    1. mbmom11 - My sister's husband is from Philadelphia, so they used to go to the shore in the summer to stay with his family. I never watched the Jersey Shore reality show, but the glimpses I got from the hype surrounding that show did not leave a good impression. Mini's bestie lives there year round and she says riding a bike to the shore is the best. After seeing the setup in the off season, I believe it. Such cute little towns and so much beach access. It's always fun to see how different people live. I can see how it would be difficult to carve out time for the beach life while busy studying and working, but dang - it seems like a great place to visit.

It is CRAZY to me that this medication can make such a difference. I ate food (other than gluten) with reckless abandon (sort of), and I survived. I didn't follow the ridiculously restrictive low FODMAP diet and I felt OK. My beef is still that I want the doctor to solve the problem, and my fear is glossing over it with meds will lead to doctors saying "Oh look. You're fine." I believe this nonsense is solvable. I cannot believe it is as hard as it is.

The side effects do suck. I didn't anticipate the meds kicking in so quickly, which was great - but also, I didn't pack Miralax. Well, the meds kicked in in more ways than one. Ugh.

  2. I've always wanted to go to the Jersey Shore but haven't yet! It's not even THAT far away so I gotta get on that. Having a friend who owns an Irish pub and a trolley is an awesome friend to have :) I'm glad you got some good sleep and the mission trip kids had a good time.

    1. Colleen - I told Coach when we drove to the airport. I wanna come out here and visit Colleen Martin one day soon. She's not that far from here (spoken with a weak grasp on the geography of the east coast, but knowing you are also near the water). We didn't get to see their pub. It was 30 minutes away from the house and we arrived Friday around 6 pm. The family that arrived on Thursday had time to visit the pub. I hope we can visit it next time, when the girls are all 21. He's looking for a buyer, so not sure how much time we have. Trolley service was perfect. Great sleep is so essential. Ahh.

  3. It sounds like you had a really great getaway. Maybe that was just what you needed.

    1. Nance - It was a fun weekend. Short but sweet. I have a few other friends and a nephew living in Brooklyn right now. There's never enough time, but I hope to get back out there to visit more friends.

  4. I'm glad your dip survived! That was a brave move!! Ahhhh! Sounds like a really fun weekend, though! I am glad the meds helped you sleep better. I'd for sure stay on them because not sleeping well is so horrific!

I have been to NJ so much for work but there is never really any downtime on these trips so I've never been to the Jersey shore.

    1. Lisa - Yeah, it dawned on me the day before we left that my checked bag would be turned upside down and on different angles, so I was fearful of the tilting and sliding. It wasn't all that bad and I smoothed it back into position. I'm really hoping the moms' weekend happens this summer, and that it lands on a weekend when I can get away.

    1. Sarah - Hee hee. Yep. It helps that I accidentally realized that I am a Platinum Pro level customer with AA, which translates to checking three bags per passenger in my party for FREE. Let's go . . . and bring the taco dip. ;)

  6. Glad you got some rest! I've never heard of being arrested for going 25 mph over the speed limit?? Here, you'd just have to go to traffic court to pay the fine. Ask me how I know :)

I've been to Jersey, but never the Jersey Shore.

    1. Bijoux - I'm glad to get some rest too. I'd feel better about it if the doctor figured out what the heck the issue is. Good grief. Maybe the test on Friday will show something that clicks. Yeah, I'm not sure if that's accurate. I think the cop must've told them this. Ask me how I know. Hee hee. Yeah, well . . . I got four speeding tickets in less than 5 months, I think. And, I lost driving privileges until we went to court and got a few tickets over turned. It's funny now, sort of. I can't believe I did that.

I'd been to Princeton before to watch my son play water polo, but totally forgot about that and was telling everyone I hadn't been to NJ. This was a totally different part of the state. I loved Princeton, and this was also amazing. Highly recommend.

  7. This is how I pack a salad for family things. Everything is packed separately - lettuce, salad dressing, cheese, berries, carrots - and then I toss it all together when I get there. It's so funny how we have to do these things!

    1. Engie - I do think a salad that hasn't all marinated together in the backseat of a car is the way to go.

  8. I love a good seven-layer dip! I’ve never been to New Jersey, though my dad grew up there. We had planned a road trip a few years back to go together, and I’m really sad we never got to make it happen.

    1. Kari - I've bee making this dip for about 18 or 19 years. Still remember finding it on the internet and making it for our NYE gathering. Loved it and never looked back. I could make it blindfolded.

I didn't know your dad grew up in NJ. I'm sorry that road trip never happened. It's a pretty place in the fall, and from what I've heard the beach life is pretty ideal.

  9. I can’t believe you packed taco dip in your checked bag! Well done and happy it survived. I have never been to the Jersey Shore. Maybe someday but can’t say it’s on my list. You have mentioned it before but I’m always a little shocked to hear that you lost your license because of too many speeding tickets! What a rebel. Pat

    1. Pat - I didn't think there would be time to whip it up when I was there. Part of me wished we'd arrived on Thursday, so we could have more time to relax and look around, but having the dip pre-made and ready to assemble was key.

I'm laughing at you labeling me a rebel. Well, at times, I guess. This was more of a case of needing to be all the places all the times and there was only one of me. I got two tickets on the same trip to Wisconsin to visit colleges with Lad. Grrr.

  10. In a million years, I would never even think of travelling on a plane with a 7 layer dip! You are crazy!!!! So glad it worked out!

    1. Beth - Hee hee. I would never have considered it until Mini's friend made the request. I didn't think I'd have time to whip it up in someone else's kitchen. It was in a checked bag - something I rarely do, check a bag. It was a big hit as usual. (credit for that is the internet - not like there's any skill involved, unless you count packaging it carefully on a flight).

  11. The NC group made their own fire pit? OMG.
I loved hearing how the kids connected so quickly during their mission trip; very cool.
You rode in a Tolley? That looks/sounds like so much fun. Sharing a full sized bed with a full sized man? NOT SO FUN.
Yay for the 10MG working for you. Maybe this is the trick? Could this be the end of your stomach issues? Will be awaiting the results of your small intestine photo shoot. (Only you!!)
Also, ONLY YOU would travel with a seven layer dip. Most people would have been happy with six layers.

    1. Suz - Happy with 6 layers. Hee hee. I do think the 10 mg is enough, but not sure if I'll still end up having the same weight gaining side effect and I already ruined another pair of contact lenses. I'm planning to order daily wear - maybe that'll help.
