Reset: the stars aligned, and a fun, memory-making adventure

It's Sunday night and I just got home. It was a whirlwind. The 2 little girls and I drove to St. Louis Saturday. We left around 12:45 after they each had some time with their closest friend respectively. Curly drove down in the morning with a teammate, so she was sure to arrive in plenty of time to play. This meant I could have a bit more time at home.

I slept fine Friday night, but only sleeping 2.5 hours Thursday night caught up with me on the drive down. I could NOT keep my eyes open. I had a Coke with me, but I avoided drinking it in order to skip having to stop to pee.

Instead, I reached for these Talking Point cards that my SIL, Aunt Leprechaun, gave our family at Christmas. We hadn't used them yet. The girls had been reading in the backseat.

Fun fact:  they do really well on long car rides. Note to self:  next time they tick you off, book a hotel somewhere, throw them in the backseat, and start driving. Kidding. Sort of.

I asked them if they wanted to read through some of these questions. They were all about it. We laughed and joked around and shared things with each other. Biggest pet peeve. My answer:  sniffling. Rae had the sniffles and I told her to toss a box of Kleenex in the car and she forgot, so we all laughed at that one. My laugh might have been through gritted teeth.

Other questions included things like what we'd do if we had 3 wishes. Both girls said one wish would be spent on making both of their feet the same size. Having club feet really sucks for them. Questions popped up about whether or not you'd prefer to spend a week in the past or in the future. What wild animal you'd keep if you could train one to live with you. You get the idea.

One thing that I sort of anticipated, but never came up:  no talk of wanting to go back in time to make my parents/mom behave differently/make better choices.

Overall, it was a really good trip. Short and sweet. The family therapist had suggested more connection. Trying to get the girls up to speed to how we do things leads to lots of correcting.

Exhibit A:  Rae wore pants that she found in her gym locker a few weeks ago, because 'hers now.' Um, no. Those need to go to the lost and found. I swear the correcting is constant and we do connect with them by way of family games, or they'll sit in the study and watch video clips with me as I prep Reg's video, or we'll chat in the stands at a sporting event. But it is hard to always connect. Plus I've been out of town at b-ball a lot lately.

We surprised Curly and hung this on the door of
her room. Rae made it on the drive down. Note
the top right corner:  BY:  YOUR BIGGEST FAN.
Cute, right?

Then this happened at check-in:

Hotel (AC Marriott, fancier than I anticipated and the girls were amazed at the fancy touches in the bathroom, etc.):  Oh, looks like you booked 2 queen beds.

Me:  Yep.

Hotel:  Oops. We oversold those. I can put you in a room with a pullout.

Me:  No. That won't work. I didn't pack a sleeping bag and there's no way the two girls can share a pullout.

Hotel:  OK, we'll just give you two king rooms then, and we'll pay for one of them.

Score! The rooms didn't adjoin, but they were right next to each other. I 'bout lost my mind trying to keep the room keys separate in their little envelopes. Two rooms was ideal, because I'd stressed about all 4 of us in one room. Curly hangs out with teammates till 1 am sometimes. Plus, one bathroom? I considered leaving the girls home because of the fact that the room wasn't an Embassy Suites type set up. Rae took the king & Kay took the pullout in one room. Curly and I shared the king in the other room.

I have b-ball stories to go into another time, but Curly played great. We only had 6 girls, (thus the story for another time) so she was exhausted after the 4 games in 2 days.

Before we drove to St. Louis (Chesterfield to be exact), I found out that the hotel didn't have a pool. What on earth? Or a microwave in the room, but one was in the lobby which was fine. Or a free breakfast, so I packed breakfast food.

Sunday before Curly's games, we had some free time. The zoo was the wrong direction and we had limited time after we went to church. Plus we had to check out by noon. Only staying one night threw me off. In Texas for b-ball we were there 3 nights. I'd instructed the girls to bring bathing suits in case we bumped into friends at another hotel and managed an invite to their pool.

There was no bumping, so we drove to an area with abundant hotel options. I told them to just act casual. Nothing to see here sort of thing. We were gonna borrow pool time from another hotel, or die trying.

At the first hotel, we turned the corner and the pool was empty. Foiled.

Rae thought we were done, and she was not sure about the whole idea and what have I done corrupting foster children? I told her, If at first you don't succeed . . .

The next hotel was like a ghost town, which wasn't good because we needed foot traffic to open the pool door. It was like a conference center, so the pool was a mile away from everything, down a long hall. There were no people. A locked door.

I told the girls to wait there. I walked down the hall and was gonna ask a guest for the loan of their key, but then I realized that this woman worked in the hotel as she was entering the Staff Only room. Eek.

Me:  Never mind.

Staff:  No, what do you need? It's fine.

Me:  My husband when to the store and took our room key and my kids were hoping to go for a swim.

Staff:  No problem.

Woot! Woot!

B-I-N-G-O!

There were no towels in the pool area and I wasn't about to go ask at the front desk. Magically a worker appeared to deliver towels to the empty towel shelves. There were even goggles in the lost and found that they borrowed. The girls swam for a half hour before we raced back to our hotel to gather our things, change clothes, and drive to Curly's game. It was an adventure.

We arrived home safe and sound at 9 pm Sunday night. 30 minutes earlier than  Google Maps predicted. Hi, Google Maps, have we met?  Um, fortunately there were no speeding tickets for the queen of speeding tickets. All in all, the stars aligned this weekend.

The girls' social worker is coming this afternoon to follow up on my tearful call last week. We've had a nice break from regular life and the nitty gritty of rules and expectations. I hope her conversation hits home with them a little.

As in:  rules are necessary, fun happens, too. Balance. Remember to be respectful.

Thanks for the words of encouragement after Friday's panic post. Truly so appreciated. I had a little pick me up each time I saw another comment. I feel blessed to have all of you in my internet world.

This week:  I'm hosting a pasta party for both the girls' varsity soccer team and the varsity boys' volleyball team Thursday night. And two amazing college kids who are very willing to support our adoption goal, reinforce our rules, but also joke around and set a good example COME HOME ON FRIDAY. I'm counting the hours, can you tell? XO

  1. What a nice weekend! And you and the hotel pool- naughty but nice!
When my sister comes to visit, she rents a hotel room for one night of stay so they can have a swim, cable TV , and waffles in the morning. It's magic! And probably cheaper than an hour of therapy- so don't dismiss your plan to take them away if needed. Come down here, or even Peoria! Hotels with breakfasts, microwaves, and pools. And plenty of Catholic churches. The Cathedral on Peoria is a work of art. In my town, we have a choice of 3- and even a saint's tomb!
I hope your week us good, and welcome home college kids!
PS - I think you owe us a story about Tank and his summer internship. I hope he got one!

  2. Oh, and sniffles? The worst. I buy Kleenex for any classroom I'm in because I cannot stand to hear the sniffling and snorting. You'd think college students would bring their own with them if they gave a cold? But no! So it would be a cacophony of snorts if I didn't supply them. I am also known to carry extra small packs of Kleenex to hand to students to take with them- it's no fun having a runny nose.

  3. I’m so happy your weekend went well. And your pool “scam”! Brilliant! That never would have occurred to me. Well done.

  4. I'm really appreciating the Irony of "rules are necessary" on the heels of you lying your way into another hotel's pool. LOL

It sounds like your day trip was a good bonding session with the younger girls. All the talking about different things on the way helped you all to get to know more about one another in a lot of different arenas without them feeling interrogated. And them having their own room made them feel trusted. Sounds like a winning experience. You were overdue for that, for sure.

  5. I'm surprised the girls' wishes weren't related to their bio parents... Maybe that means they've accepted that the life w/ their mom wasn't for the best, or they are burying those feelings.

I'm glad you had a fun weekend, though. Getting out and about and doing something can be helpful to sort of reset things. But I hope the behavior is better this week.

  6. I will never understand why hotels, airlines, etc. overbook. What’s the purpose of making a reservation? Yes, I get that people cancel, but it still pisses me off. On another subject, I would never in a million years attempt to use a pool somewhere else. 🤓 That’s out of my comfort zone!

  7. Swimming was always my favorite part of staying at a hotel, I think it really makes it feel like a vacation! I'm glad you were able to squeeze some in and had a good time.

Regarding your recent post about hair cuts and shedding: I just had the dryer vent cleaned out and it was full of hair! I wasn't expecting that!

  8. Oh, I'm so glad you had a chance to reset with the girls. That's really great to pick up on the fact that they do so well in the car. I know you've had fifty bazillion other things going on recently but that may be a good trick to keep up your sleeve if you need to get past a rough spot with them.

This has more to do with your other post but I'm just going to include it in the comment here -- the statement of the other family being "like family" is something my own 10-year-old has said and I was surprised at how insecure it made me feel. This was on the heels of her spending the night with a friend who is an only child. They went out to dinner, out to breakfast, to the trampoline park, AND to a minigolf place. Of course she was in hog heaven and came home talking about how it was the best weekend of her life. She wasn't saying it in a rude way, but it landed SO badly, and I can just imagine my reaction if it *was* said in a mean way. I also think we value respect so much that it's like a slap in the face to be treated disrespectfully -- and so tough to hold that line of communicating expectations for behavior (and implementing consequences) while also recognizing that they are acting out of their own hurt and insecurities.

Anyway, I'm glad the room situation worked out and you were even able to make the pool happen ;)

  9. Girl, I hope the Pool Police don't catch up with you. 🤣 I've never done anything like that. LOL

I love that you had a nice weekend; quick, but a good departure from the everyday rules and such.

The card game/conversation starter sounds great! I hope you were able to get some ample sleep last night. And yay for the college kids coming home! Woot Woot!

  10. LOL at the pool-- way to MAKE IT WORK

  11. Car talks are great. I think it's because you aren't looking at each other directly, it's easier to open up.

  12. You're so brave. I'd be too afraid to do that (in re: the pool).

I like that card game. That's a fun car ride idea.

  13. I'm so glad that you had this opportunity to connect, and that it all worked out and everything is better now. I'm a little surprised that the girls didn't share a bed since it was a king and they're sisters, but every one has their own comfort zone, for sure.

I used to work in hotels, and the key is just as you said. Act like you belong there. Polite for sure, but not nervous or anything. I'm glad you were able to make it work.

  14. mbmom11 - Naughty but nice, so funny. How fun that the kids get to swim when family visits. Yes, waffles and swimming can turn any place feel vacation-like.

Oh, the sniffles. Why? Just blow your dang nose! It drives me batty.

  15. I stayed in a mid-range hotel last week and I was shocked at how nice the bathroom was!! What's up with all these hotels bringing up their bathroom game?

I should look into those conversation starter packs. Sometimes things get dull around here...

  16. Pat - I was glad it went well too. It would've gotten really ugly if it was a shit weekend and we were stuck in a hotel in a different city. Yikes. And, the 'borrowing' pool time thing, well - I have some tricks up my sleeve. What can I say, I like to live on the edge. ;)

  17. Nance - Ha. The irony was not lost on me. So sirree. Some rules are made to be broken, maybe?

I need to reach out to Aunt Leprechaun to share with her how helpful those cards were last weekend. I'm sure she'll be pleased. There was a girl on one of the teams that Curly played who had bright red 'Curly' hair, so same hair just different color. One of Curly's teammates has the same hair too, put is a brunette. Rae had an endless amount of fun comparing the three girls and cheering for them or commenting on who was the frizziest. It was a hoot. Those kind of light hearted times are so refreshing, unless they get annoying, then it is a different vibe. College kids are coming home and they know the score and they are gonna be supportive and I'm ready for that.

  18. Lisa - I was surprised too. The girls know all about their mom's issues. I think like it or not, they accept it. Sort of? Rae will say things like, I wish my mom didn't choose drugs instead of me. Wow. I also think that the girls now see what it is like to have a mom who acts like a mom and they appreciate the difference, most of the time. ;)

The behavior has been mostly fine/acceptable this week.

  19. Bijoux - I agree. Why do they roll the dice like that? That happened to us once and we ended up with a king bed for Coach, Reg, Curly, and myself. Not enough places for us to sleep. So dumb.

I figured it was worth a try and the pay off was worth the it. Plus, now we have a funny story. The first pool being empty was so funny. What were the chances?

  20. Jenny in WV - We used to love the pool part of staying at a hotel. There was a place with a pool and an indoor mini golf and ping pong down the street from Notre Dame and Saint Mary's and my mom used to take us there when we visited my sister at college. So much fun.

Eek on having the ducts cleaned. We should probably do that since Finn lived here. And now Rae, our other shedder.

  21. Kate - Yes the long drive is a good thought to keep in my tool shed. Coach teaches a class in KC in early June. His sister lives there. She has a pool. She has offered for him to bring the girls and she will entertain them during the day while he is teaching. Does that mean that I don't have to come along? Does she REALLY mean that she will entertain them during the day? Hmm. He has to soon decide if he will fly or drive. I will be a few weeks away from hosting a grad party, so I would love a break. But I wonder if it is asking too much. Her four kids are grown.

The story of your daughter's friend's family making all the fun happen is so relatable. I don't think Rae meant it as hurtful, but I also feel like she needs to recognize what it is to be a family. Take the good with the bad, etc. She hugs some people, like friends and my mom, freely, but will not hug us. I'm hoping that soon changes.

I was worried having them bring their suits even when there wasn't a pool might be disappointing, but pool time for the win.

  22. Suz - I promise to never jump the multiple fences at your fort Knox and 'borrow' pool time. Hee hee. I'm relieved that I managed to stay 2 steps ahead of the pool police.

The game was fun and it did help us shift away from the hurt feelings and the elephant in the room, as in You girls just really pushed the envelope.

I've been sleeping well ever since. I sweat my gut was 'off' all day Thursday so I refuse to count the disaster of sleep as a nerves. I think the meds help me, but I do still have some strange stuff happening and I attribute it to the underlying SIBO. Even the antidepressant isn't going to totally rid me of the issue.

  23. Sarah - I felt one part sneaky but most other parts like a rock star. ;)

  24. Kara - That's a good point. I have had some good talks, esp with Rae while in the car.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Kari - I was surprised that I didn't feel the least bit nervous that we would be caught. Act casual. I think that's the key.

It is a fun car ride game and as a bonus it helped keep the driver awake.

  26. J - They could've shared the king easily but they really don't get along very well, unless they decide they both hate us at the same exact moment, which is what contributed to the disaster last week. I let them pick who got the real bed and who got the pullout. Kay will get the pick of beds the next time such a choice arises. Kay slept way longer than she usually does, so I guess the pullout was plenty comfy.

Yes, act natural. I was so glad it worked. I was ALL IN, gonna swim or die trying. ;)

  27. NGS - Ha. That's funny. I agree though, what is with the new fixtures? On the other hand I'll, I've stayed at hotels recently that still have the very short toilets. I found that surprising.

Talking points was fun. I think it would be fun for anyone. It certainly can jazz up a conversation.

  28. So happy you were able to connect with the girls... and the pool time probably got you bonus points. (You're so brave, I'd have never attempted to sneak into a pool area at a hotel LOL)

  29. San - It was a relief, because I was unsure how the weekend would go, but it started us off on the right foot. Brave, or goofy? Ha.
