Italy: getting there is half the fun, plus hilarity

When Coach and I got to O'Hare, I was wiped. I'd barely slept. When we got to our gate, I ate my GF pizza that I made before we left. Security had flagged my bag. "That's my pizza. I have celiac. Please don't touch my food." I considered this my last meal, like What if I can't find anything to eat, or more immediately - what if the airline forgot to pack the GF meal I'd requested?

Then I moved to a row of seats a few rows over (still at our gate), because people near us were loud and I wanted to snooze. I slept for about 30 minutes, sitting in a chair with my feet on my wheelie bag and scooched down enough that my head could rest on the back of the chair. I WOKE UP AND FELT AMAZING . . . until I saw Coach - sitting by our original spot, waving at me.

The airline people had walked around and identified bags that they thought looked heavy. What? I'd bought carry-on wheelie bags. Operative words:  carry-on. She weighed our bags, and made us check them. I was slightly panicked/still groggy. Where were my meds? Did I need anything out of this bag that I assumed they were gonna drop in the ocean?

Despite feeling a little unsettled, I slept SO MUCH on our flight. Coach was jealous. Maybe having crappy sleep is me cracking the code on how to beat jet lag. When we flew to Budapest to see Ed, the shooting pain down my leg was insane. I had none of that. Praise the Lord.

Coach hunting for the right bus:  take 1.

We changed planes in Zurich. Guess who slept on that entire short flight? Yep - me! I felt almost refreshed when we got to Rome.

We struggled to find the bus that would drop us near our hotel. Once we figured that out, we lugged all of our stuff (our bags made it- Phew) to the bus and I asked if we could pay for tickets on the bus. The driver didn't even look up, but pointed. What exactly was he pointing at? I may never know. We trudged back to the train station and eventually found a newsstand that sold the tickets.

Regrets:  I have them. This process took forever and looking back, I wish we'd just waited at the train station for Mini. I was thinking she was arriving by train hours after us, and she WAS -but since we'd waited for our bags and lapped the train station multiple times, and practically had to hand over a kidney to get a bus ticket (that no one ever looked at), we'd killed a lot of time.

Mini arrived at the train station, a mere 10 minutes from our hotel, shortly after we were checked into our room. I felt so dumb. She couldn't figure out the bus ticket buying thing either and my directions weren't helping. She was grumpy.

No, I haven't watched
My Octopus
 Teacher, why do you ask?
But then she arrived and SHE WAS WITH US . . . and all felt right in the world. Oh my gosh. It was so great to hug her (she's not a big hugger, have we talked about the fact that she's so ticklish, I think it's almost a disability?). We went to dinner in a restaurant built in a cave, and she told a story that had us dying laughing. Plus, I ate octopus.

While cutting into
her dinner, Mini's
 food spit at her and
she hadn't packed
 much for our
 Rome visit. Ugh.
 Guess who had
 baby wipes
 back in the room?
*I vowed to not make a fuss if a place couldn't feed me, just eat what I thought might work, or decide to eat a bag of safe snacks back at the room. Octopus (I don't generally like seafood) was tasty. Despite my coma-like flight demeanor, I was tired and hungry and I think I would've eaten my own foot if necessary.

Mini's story:  Not sure you'll get the gist without her facial expressions and antics. Use your imagination. Mini and a few friends did a wine tasting thing. The waitress gave them instructions that the girls found confusing. Her bestie from home, who was visiting, deferred to Mini to start. The waitress poured water in Mini's glass. She indicated a bowl (?) in the middle of the table and said Spit. (or something close/sounded like spit)

Mini shrugged, swished the water in her mouth, and then spit it into the bowl. The waitress grimaced, waved her hand, moved the bowl away from Mini's face, and said, "No, no!"

I think she was supposed to swish the water in her glass and then pour the water in the bowl. I can't remember. I was cry laughing.

Know anyone who is ridiculously ticklish? Have you eaten octopus? Have you messed up at a wine tasting? Clearly you can dress us Shenanigans up, but you can't take us out (hello, sauce splatter, wine spitting).

  1. You mean you packed light so that you could just do carry on and then they made you check that bag? I’d be SO upset!!! I’m glad you found food to eat. I’ve had octopus and didn’t think it was worth the hype. I’ve been to probably 200 wine tastings (it’s our thing) but I don’t remember my first one. I can see how a newbie would be confused by the ‘spit bowl’ as it does not involve spitting. It’s to dump the wine you don’t want to finish. If they are not giving you a flight in separate glasses, the server usually rinses your glass out with water and dumps it for you. Real connoisseurs dislike the water rinse as it can affect the next pour, so separate glasses are much preferred.

    1. Bijoux - Yes, if by light you mean I squeezed in everything that I possibly could in order to have 3 pairs of shoes (one I wore) and 4 or 5 outfits - most everything worn twice and no hairdryer (but a travel diffuser) and very few toiletries - that was me. I was so upset, And it was weird, they kept saying I had to check my bag, but when we objected they were like, OH - YOU DON'T WANT US TO? Huh? It worked out but I was bummed. I was unaware that octopus had any hype. I don't think it was hype worthy. Aha, you have the inside scoop here on wine tasting. Like daughter like mother in this case - I would've been clueless.

  2. How great that you got sleep on the flight! I dont think i could handle doing all that train/bus stuff, esp after a long flight. Looking forward to more stories!

    1. Mbmom11 - Coach managed all of the bus and train schedules and I've done that before and was perfectly happy to be uninvolved, except for the time we arrived so early for a train . . . story to follow.

  3. That’s frustrating that you were forced to check your carryon. It’s happening a lot now as so many are opting for carryon only. If you had told them you had meds in the bag they wouldn’t/couldn’t have taken it though. Glad you got all that sleep. I understand Coach- I barely sleep on overnight flights and get annoyed when I see others snoozing away.
I have known a lot of ticklish people but never so sensitive that they couldn’t handle a hug - that’s next level. I’m not a big fan of octopus but yes, after watching My Octopus Teacher my husband and I said we’d never eat it again. (It is a VERY good movie!)

    1. Pat - Protip on the 'I have meds in my bag, I cannot check it' bit. Good to know. I have a story about Coach on the plane that I'd forgotten about until I was flipping through my pics. Story to follow.
My fault - I didn't mean to imply that Mini's non-hugging status is related to her ticklish nature. I don't think that's the case, but in general she's not big on touching people or being hugged.
I'll have to add The Octopus Teacher to our list of family movies to watch. I assume it's family friendly. Maybe I'll never eat Octopus again, which would not really make me sad.

  4. I'm too freaked out on a plane to sleep so I'm impressed by anyone that can!
I'm very ticklish. Several years ago for employee appreciation week free chair massages were offered. It was the most un-relaxing 10 minute of my life! I had physical therapy last fall for tendonitis in my foot and I would end up squirming though the massage part!
Haven't tried octopus. I don't really like most seafood so I probably never will - I'm more of a steak and potatoes person.
I've been to a few wine tastings, but none were super formal with an option to rinse the glass. I've never been much of a drinker and generally prefer pop to alcohol. Funny wine story: At my first communion (and I am a convert, so I was 31 at the time) I was not expecting the wine to taste so bad, I made such a face the person in line behind me actually said "Don't spit it out!"

    1. Jenny in WV - I've been on flights when I struggled to sleep and that's the worst. I was so grateful to sleep for an hour or more, wake for a bit, then sleep again. Yikes, your massage chair experience sounds like it wasn't very soothing. I tried to give Mini a back massage when she was struggling to sleep during exams and I drove to ND. She was a wiggly worm who squealed. I was ready to smack her. I'M TRYING TO HELP YOU RELAX, DAMN IT.

You must've made quite the face to have other people notice. Ha.

  5. So all you need to catch up on your sleep is to take an international flight. Seems doable.

Wine tastings can be so intimidating for people sometimes. It's like a little secret society with hidden rules. But wine people are--for the most part--very friendly and fun. Just ask, "So! What do I do here?" and someone will happily help you along.

In Mini's case, however, it was a bit tough with the language barrier and no one to watch first to see what to do. And, like Bijoux said, it's preferred not to rinse the glass at all. I'd rather dump and use the same glass as long as I'm not mixing red and white if a clean one isn't offered.

    1. Nance - I guess so, flying overseas to catch up sleep - totally rational.

I'm glad to hear about this secret society with hidden rules, because it sounds like Mini might not have completely missed the boat. I believe the language barrier played a role.

The clean glass thing does sound like it would be the preferred way to go. Who wants water in their wine?

  6. I'm so impressed with your sleeping skills—I can't sleep very well on trips, especially on airplanes.

The only reason I know what to do at wine tastings is thanks to all my Real Housewives watching. 😊

    1. Kari - I can sleep in cars and on planes. I guess it's my super power.

Look at you with the Real Housewives viewer perk. Hilarious. I've never seen one episode of that show.

  7. I'm very ticklish. So I just tell people that I don't like to be touched.

I think you cracked the travel code! I'm jealous. I can't really sleep on planes, and if I do, I wake up with heartburn.

I love grilled octopus. When it's cooked well, it's delicious. When it's cooked poorly, it's a rubber band.

    1. Kara - Yeah, I wonder if that's part of the reason Mini doesn't like to hug. She's just not big on public displays of affection.

Believe me - I've been on plenty of flights where I was unable to sleep. This one was the exception and I was so relieved, because no one wants to spend time with me if I am sleep deprived. It's ugly.

I don't remember being overly impressed with the octopus, but I don't think it was rubberband like.

  8. I never managed to sleep on long plane rides but those were all taken before I had kids and I seem to be much more tired now, even though I don't have super young kids so maybe I'd sleep great now!

I bet it was so great to be reunited with Mini!!

    1. Lisa - I have struggled to sleep on flights before. Maybe the difference is having the sibo diagnoses and taking my antacid, because that's helped my sleep in general. Weidrly since I've been home, I've been struggling with swallowing and burping, etc. It feels like my food is not going down. I assumed it was because my meds were adjusting to the time change, but I've been home for weeks. Back to the GI. Good times.

  9. Oh goodness, I’m so glad you slept so well on your way to Italy, what a difference that makes! I barely slept when I went to France a few years ago, and it really threw me off (on the way home that is). I barely slept for a week, my jet lag was so bad.

Octopus is really delicious, especially at a good restaurant. I don’t think I would try to cook it at home, though I sometimes see it at the grocery store.

  10. Oh, how annoying- I HATE when airlines make you check your carryon!!! Last time I flew back from Texas, United make me check my carryon- not because it was too heavy, but because they said there wasn't enough room on the plane. THEN, through no fault of my own I missed my connecting flight (thanks again, United) and had to spend the night in Houston. But I didn't have my bag BECAUSE THEY MADE ME CHECK IT! I had nothing- no toiletries, change of clothes, etc. Grr. Not my fave traveling experience.
Anyway... I've never actually gone to a wine tasting, and now I'm intimidated, I didn't know it was so complicated (although- if they spoke English I could probably manage.)
I mean... octopus seems so gross to me, honestly. But glad you found gluten free options!

  11. I'm thrilled to learn that you got some actual sleep while traveling AND your luggage made it there too. Double bonus points!
I'm laughing at Mini's wine tasting mix up---but if she didn't know, she just didn't know! She'll remember next time, you pour from your glass to the communal bowl of whatever you don't drink or have spat up. (spat up? Is that correct?)

I've never eaten octopus, and having watched The Octopus Teacher and then I just finished reading Remarkably Bright Creatures, I don't think I ever will. 🫣

  12. How great that you could get so much sleep on the plane! That had to make a huge difference. I enjoy your stories about your travel adventures and about Mini's wine tasting. I have never eaten Octopus. It just looks so....tentacley. But I'm glad you found something you could eat and that it was good. Probably better than eating your own foot! (Ha! You're so funny!)

  13. I love octopus! I will order it any time I see it because you can't just get it anywhere!! Sometimes it's a little rubbery if it's not cooked right bit generally it's so good! Yummy!!
