I feel like a bad blog friend, and I'm sorry. The hectic pace of life right now is killing me. Understatement. I promise I'll get over to read your posts soon. I'm trying to stay afloat, but this week I made Rocky Road fudge bars, Peppermint ice cream cake, and I have the batter in the fridge for Chocolate Crinkle cookies. Plus I finished the ornaments I make for the tots. The older girls and I found gifts for two god children tonight (Wednesday). The rest will be gift cards. Progress.
Tuesday night I stayed up too late to draft this post. I'd gotten my allergy shots, so I was groggy as all hell. Plus I can't sleep more than 6 hours currently - hey, 6 hours isn't all bad, but still. I'll take more sleep, please. I wanted to go to bed. Then I realized that it was Tuesday, not Wednesday - and I was drafting a post a day early. Dummy.
The latest:
Saturday night, I was in my study begging my desktop to cooperate and print my envelopes. I struggle setting up mail merges. What can I say, I'm human and mail merges are angry little functions of a software that hates me for some wrong that I cannot account for. While I was in the study, a loud KABOOM happened. Everything from the study closet was falling to the floor. Guess what? The shelves ripped from the wall on one side and everything DID fall to the floor.
Coach was good enough to move the boxes of photos and things up to our pit room. I'm hosting like 40 people for Christmas and who has time to rebuild shelves and figure stuff out? The weird thing is, this closet hasn't been recently loaded with more stuff. It's been bearing an incredibly weighty load for some time now, apparently. It just gave up. There's a metaphor in there somewhere, but I'm too exhausted to elaborate.
Our room is pure chaos. I have bins of clothes (some from Curly, some from Aunt Leprechaun and other friends who were good enough to share hand-me-downs when the girls moved in) waiting for when the girls grow into them and I've run out of room in the basement storage room.
Enter photo and memory storage from the study closet to the mix, and our room literally looks like we're moving, or we should consider moving. Remember, Ed uses our room as his work from home space, because no babies nap there currently. I mention this in case you'd like to add a card table butted up against my dresser in order to plug his computer into my big screen TV while he's working as part of the visual.
Sunday evening, Coach's stomach started to hurt. He and Rae when down with a stomach bug.
When vomit city hit, Coach opted to sleep on the floor of our room, so as not to contaminate me. Now there are blankets and sleeping bags tossed between the card table and the bins and boxes - well, it's an inviting space. Trust me.
While Coach was writing in pain in bed after dinner awaiting the inevitable, we've all been there and it is the worst - right?, I printed off my envelopes. We'd planned to decorate the tree, but with Rae and Coach unavailable, we postponed.
Kay was a little lost. She is a button pusher. I'll leave it at that. I was trying to organize the many photos I had printed to make the ornaments for the tots while I was camped out on the study floor feeding stacks of envelopes into the printer.
Me: WHY ARE WE STILL ON THE END OF THE ALPHABET?
I paused the printing, and investigated. For some reason, that will forever frustrate me, my printer printed the same 100 addresses twice - skipping the last 150 addresses on my list. It was in the process of reprinting THE SAME addresses the 3rd time when I, a clever distracted girl, realized it. I've done mail merges many times. This was a new development.
I had a box of extra envelopes in the study closet from a few years ago when my former ass-hole printer ate most of my envelopes. This would be the closet that recently crumbled in a jumbled mess. Can you believe that the box of extra envelopes was on a top shelf, clearly marked, unmoved by the tiny closet-quake? I printed my envelopes and went to bed crazy ass late. And when Kay arrived to argue with me about God knows what, my older kids summoned her to the family room. They knew there was a storm-a-brewing.

| I'm not crazy about the stockings. They're a bit cheap, but they're fine. The girls were tickled to come from from school and see that we had new stockings that included their names. |
Dec. 19th, Curly's 16th birthday - we finally decorated our tree. Most of the kids were present.
I'm trying to forget the amount of time wasted spent trying to order another set of holders at Target. Out of stock. How far would I travel to pick some up? I didn't feel like spending $50 just to get free shipping. This was a debacle I didn't need.
Guess what I found buried in the box of ornaments? The missing 2 stocking holders.

I may have wept a bit trying to order a few online gifts yesterday morning, before I lost an appliance. I wish I had a more definite gift buying list - one that I can stick to, and then feel done when all was bought. I don't feel done now and I doubt I'll feel done before the 25th. It'll all be fine, of course.
I'd like to wish all of you a wonderful Christmas or whatever it is that you celebrate. I'm ever so grateful for you, my blog friends. You make me laugh, and you offer me such kindness and support. I so enjoy getting a glimpse into your world. I'm so grateful that you've chosen to connect with me. May your 2024 be filled with tons of comments, good health, and fulfilled dreams.
Yours,
Ernie (you might have to remind me to come back and update some of these posts when I take my blog off the privacy setting)

Oh, my goodness, Ernie. Ernie. You are doing more than any one person should have to do. You have gotten so much done, and while I understand the feelings of discombobulation, given that you're usually so on top of things, think about what the last 6 weeks have been like. You've added people to your household, navigated an unbelievable situation for one of your kids at his school, worked, dealt with health issues, fed everyone who needs to be fed, and thought about everyone else more than yourself.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could magically transport myself to your house to do SOMETHING. Even though I have no idea what I would do. (Trust me, you do not want me rebuilding your closet shelves...)
But I hope that you do realize that when we all leave comments here, telling you that you're doing an amazing job(S), we are absolutely sincere. Sending thoughts, a virtual hug, and hopes that you will get a bit of a reprieve with Christmas. Remember to take care of yourself, too. <3
I'm frazzled just reading this. Vomit! Shelves becoming detached from the walls! Printer psychosis! FORTY PEOPLE FOR CHRISTMAS WHAT THE WHAT. Well, wishing you good luck and continued good health (no vomit no vomit no vomit) throughout the season! All the best from me to you.
ReplyDeleteI like the stockings. The plaid is Christmas-sy and classy. (But do remove or redact the picture before your blog goes public again, most of the kids names are very readable).
ReplyDeleteMail Merge is a temperamental thing!
Give your self some grace and take some time to enjoy the season! Eventually everything will get fixed and cleaned.
Oooh nooooo not vomit right before Christmas!!! Noooooooo!!!!
ReplyDeleteI’m praying you all stay healthy and have a joyous Christmas! Your list of things to get done sounds overwhelming and wish I could help in some way. (Of course being 38+ weeks pregnant my own to do list is only getting shorter because I’m giving up on it lol.
I wish I lived closer to help you. I truly, truly do.
ReplyDeleteAND I THINK I'M BUSY.
I'm currently not on speaking terms with my printer (again), so I sympathize. As my son always asks when I'm having problems with anything--"Did you try swearing at it?" LOL
My wish for you is that you have a restful Post-Christmas time. Please make it happen if you possibly can. XO
What a WEEK Ernie! I'm so sorry you have been having such a go of it! The shelves collapsing?!?! The stomach bug?!?! THE FRIDGE FAILURE?!?! Yikes. You are a superstar, that's for sure. I hope the rest of the holiday goes smoothly.
ReplyDeleteThe new stockings look so beautiful.
Perhaps Kay is a button pusher because she trusts you a little bit? Glad you kids redirected her - you've got some smart cookies!
ReplyDeleteMay the days ahead of you go smoothly , and I hope your family has a glorious Christmas!
Nance - I am laughing at your "Did you try swearing at it?" The printers at work have gotten their act together so many times after I left the desk to give them a dirty look!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness Ernie, could anything else possibly go wrong? I do admire your patience and perseverance - I’m pretty sure I would have been weeping on the floor at some point. But then, like we moms do, gotten up and on with it. I wish you a few moments of peace in the next few days. You certainly deserve it. Hugs, Pat
ReplyDeleteI hope you are able to enjoy Christmas! Your life has been very hectic the past couple of months. You deserve a break! Merry Christmas to you and the whole Shenanigan clan!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loathe that you are so frazzled with so much happening! WHY DO ALL THE THINGS FALL AND BREAK before a big holiday? The fridge drawers, you've had issues with them before damnit.
ReplyDeleteThe shelves. YIKES. The thought of your very NOT serene bedroom. The vomit. The over-printing. YIKES.
Thankful you had extra (and found them) envelopes and you did locate the stocking hangers. Small Christmas miracles!
FOURTY PEOPLE is a lot. I'd rather move than do that.
I never use it's or its correctly, so I'd not notice at all. :)
Praying you all stay healthy and you enjoy this Christmas....especially the two newbies. May they know they are loved and wanted and that their new mom will not always be frazzled.
XOXO
Anne - Thank you so much. Do you fold laundry? Ha. It'll all be fine. Last night was a rough time - which is why I've been awake since 3:00 am. I guess you could say, I melted down. I feel taken for granted. that doesn't pair well with my doing it all mindset. Now I'm ticked. On top of everything else. This b-ball situation has become almost unbearable. It'll all work out eventually. In the meantime, I'm pretty grouchy.
ReplyDeleteNicole - Thank you. Printer psychosis - that cracked me up. Tank puked during the night Thursday night (what even day is it?). He swears he wasn't ill, but he ended up not attending his work Christmas party and that hurt my heart. B-ball crap ramped up last night and then I became frustrated with Coach, because I'm doing more than my share here. Not my best - almost hosting AND need to attend his family Christmas later today - sort of day.
ReplyDeleteJenny - I just want to sleep, but I'm too angry for that, which isn't fun. The stockings are cheap. Tank's loop to hang it on ripped off all on its own. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI guess waking at 3 am is my way of taking time for myself. I got myself all worked up last night right before bed. Coach and I got in an arguement. I wanted him to help me figure out a used wii game system to buy and he was not overly interested and I LOST IT. He apologized, but then expected me to apologize - for what exactly? For doing EVERYTHIG? I think not. I'm too grumpy to sleep.
joymarie - I am crossing my fingers that no one else gets sick. Tank was throwing up last night. But he says he felt fine. Then I made him skip work and he missed the work party with the raffle and I feel awful, esp because he works so hard and he is asking for or expecting nothing for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI've been 38 weeks pregnant at Christmas before. Goodness. Good luck. I hope you are feeling well.
Nance - I wish you lived closer to. Not so you could help me, but because we could meet for a glass of wine. Or two. ;)
ReplyDeleteI need to get some sleep but I reached my limit last night and I melted down before I went to bed and now I barely slept and I have to go to Coach's side for Christmas and I still have a house that looks like a tornado blew thru. And I'm not sure if Kay has a zoom therapy session at 9 am and I need to figure that out. I just in the middle of the night emailed Rush hospital a copy of Reg's birth certificate because they have his name wrong and my computer wasn't allowing me to scan a doc earlier and I was afraid I would forget. I'm a mess, but after Christmas I might be able to take some time to chill out. Too bad Coach didn't take any time off, because that means I'll be entertaining the girls ALL DAMN DAY. Most days. Every year it blows my mind that he doesn't take any time off.
Anyway, thank you. I appreciate it.
Suzanne - I fought with the appliance place and they are coming out tomorrow to hopefully fix it. I dread dealing with the closet after the holidays. I used to know where everything was in that closet. No clue how the shelves will be rebuilt. Might need to find another place to store the photo albums. It has been a week.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm hoping for some relaxing next week.
mbmom11- Kay definitely is not pushing buttons because she trusts me. She is trying to find a way for me to like her, but she constantly sabotages it. She likes to escalate things to be pure drama, so no one can joke around with her. That makes it hard for the kids to spend time with her. She doesn't know how to lighten up. She is constantly testing us. It isn't as bad as it once was.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas too.
Pat - Before you congratulate me, I lost my patience last night. Now I can't sleep. And it is almost day time, so not sure how I'll function. I'm made at so much and I have no where to go to be alone and chill. I have to keep plowing ahead and I get to celebrate Christmas with Coach's family later today. Not really feeling up for that.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I hope you enjoy your Christmas. I know this year will be hard.
Beth - It really has been one thing after another here, but we are all healthy and we will come through this. And somehow or another my house will get clean and the food will be made and I'm guessing I'll find time to wrap the gifts that aren't wrapped.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I hope you have a great Christmas too.
Suz - My house looks like a bomb went off and I'm too angry at Coach to sleep - so things are not settling down the way I'd hoped they would. Lat night I actually slept over 8 hours. I was so ready for that to be the WAY moving forward, and then I got ticked. So now I'm sleepless and wondering when everything will get done. We decided to get the girls a wii game system and I've been searching online for options in my 'spare time'. When I asked coach's opinion, he was not really interested and was upset because he was cleaning the kitchen. Wait now, what? I lost it. I want my own bedroom to go to, but that isn't a thing in our overcrowded, messy house.
ReplyDeleteEverything will be fine . . . after I sleep with a noisemaker on to drown out the sounds of my people cleaning the damn house.
Thanks for your kind words. It's appreciated. (see what I did there, I used it correctly)
Jenny - I'm out of order over here without my glasses (because I left them in my room when I gave up on sleep), but I laughed at the swearing at the printer comment too. ;)
ReplyDeleteGoodness gracious. The universe needs to give you a break! Printer issues have to be some of the most vexing things in the world. And I totally relate to the problem of the missing stocking holders. Someone gave us a beautiful first Christmas ornament for Victoria when she was born (in July). I'm not disciplined enough to have gone down and put it with the other ornaments, so I put it somewhere else "safe" and do I have any idea where that was? NOPE. We'll probably find it just as we finish putting away all this year's Christmas decorations.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet you still managed to get matching stockings for the whole family -- that must be HUGE for the girls to feel completely included with that.
Merry Christmas to all of you and I hope no one else gets sick!!
Kate - Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. Tank got sick, but he managed not to share it. It was a nutty week or so leading up to Christmas. Everything came together after one Mom meltdown. Christmas was lovely. The girls enjoyed everything and even interacted plenty with cousins. I was exhausted. And napped hard the day after.
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing - putting things in very good hiding spots to keep them 'safe.' I hope the ornament turns up soon. We have a cousin who thinks he left a box here and we haven't found it yet and I've crushed piles and piles of boxes.
Hope your Christmas was wonderful.
Rule of Big Family Life that everything will implode the week of a holiday-- sounds like you have rallied masterfully.
ReplyDeleteSarah - Isn't that the truth. I felt like everything came together on the 23rd. Just in the nick of time.
