have me met?

I'm new to NaBlogPoMo and I'm really enjoying discovering new blogs and welcoming new blog friends here. Thanks for visiting. In the absence of my antacid pills and Greek yogurt (until my medical test this Friday - 4 more days), I'm functioning on very little sleep, which is helping me carve out time to blog and read blogs and comment. Hooray.

How's that for turning my acid filled stomach lining into a silver lining?

*Saturday night Coach and I met another couple for drinks. I slept like a baby that night. Is alcohol the answer to sleeping sans antacid pills? Thank goodness I only have a few days left, because that could be a slippery slope.

I feel like I should introduce myself to the new 'faces'. Better late than never, right? My name is NOT Ernie in real life. (explanation tomorrow)

Me:  I have a business degree I barely used. Wish I'd been a teacher, but after juggling six kids' activities and meals, etc. while Coach worked long hours - I probably should pursue a career in logistics. This is my 9th years running my in-home daycare catering to teachers. Summers off!

Our six kids, June 2013. Grand Canyon.

I always thought I'd go back to school, but I put Coach through physical therapy school when we were first married and then I had the six kids (ages 15-25). He kept adding more letters after his name and I kept chasing the kids around while he studied for his fellowship, doctorate, etc. I worked outside the home for a few years doing marketing type stuff at a Catholic grade school while also substitute teaching, but my measly income pushed us into a higher tax bracket. Working just to pay more taxes made no sense, so babysitting and getting paid cash-money it is.

My little charges love playing
 parachute in the yard.

I like to write and I'm working on a memoir. I've had three essays/stories published, including a chapter of what I hope will one day be my memoir. You can read that chapter here. It's short and fairly entertaining, unless you are Ann or Marie, my two sisters who gave me the silent treatment after I shared the link with my fam-damily. It wasn't like I spoke to my sisters much anyway. They are BFFs with similar mindsets.

See that, now you almost have to read my published piece, because you're dying to know if it was THAT offensive. Not offensive, promise. Also, I apologize for giving you reading homework. No pressure.

Oh, I'm the middle child of 5. Afore-mentioned older sisters and two slightly younger brothers who are practically Siamese.

I blame birth order, and my upbringing in a home where favorites were played almost as much as my dad's traditional Irish music records, for my refusal to keep my mouth shut when I've been wronged. I'm a fighter with an Irish temper who refuses to be pushed around and who can write an effective email or sit across from a principal and not back down.

Tank, my 3rd son, once pointed out a t-shirt he thought I should own:  UNDERESTEIMATE ME, THAT'LL BE FUN. One of my favorite offspring compliments.

I like to bake, but I eat almost none of it. Thanks, celiac. I'm a fan of my kids' sports teams. Don't sit near me in the stands, I'm loud. I have a strong faith, a messy house, a love of working out, a wish to carve out more social time (Coach prefers to lay low after talking to patients all week, while I've been dealing with a roomful of toddlers/babies), a relief that all of my kids have FINALLY retired from Irish dancing, an occasional wish that I'd worked outside the home/discovered a career that would work for me (*see:  memoir. I need this), a tight-budget, a love of tailgating and/or visiting my kids at college (*see above:  need for social time), a good sense of humor, a love of reading - but usually too sleepy to read much, a  desire to lay in the sun poolside while reading, and a talent for shopping for things on sale.

Coming in the next week or so, once I have time to draft it, I have some Shenanigan news to share. It's a long time coming and while it's a long story, it'll be shared in short increments.

Long time, or familiar readers, did I forget something you think new folks should know? New folks, did I miss anything you'd like me to explain?  If you could switch careers, or launch a new one - what would you choose?

  1. That is such a beautiful photo of your crew, Ernie!

  2. Suzanne - Thanks. We always enjoyed visiting National Parks with them.

  3. I have a business degree and I also put my husband through (law) school before we had kids, so we have that in common! It was also never worth it for me to work, plus one of my kids has autism and needed(still needs) a lot of assistance. We loved taking our kids to the national parks over the years, too! And guess what? I also enjoy baking, though I stopped because I’m low carb now and there’s just the three of us.

  4. What a lovely little summary here Ernie, and a gorgeous picture.

  5. What a sweet photo of the kids! Great summary for all the new people, and I'm glad you're almost done with your pills. Not sure if alcohol is the answer, but at least you got some sleep!

  6. I like the photo. You did a great job of introducing yourself.

If you could switch careers, or launch a new one - what would you choose? I think I did just that when I started writing a blog!

  7. Bijoux - Look at us, we're practically twins! Ha. I freeze my cookies. Then I have them ready to go when we go somewhere or if the kids get invited somewhere. They like it when I forget a sheet in the oven, because then they get to eat them fresh from the oven.

  8. Pat - Thank you, friend. I have a photo taken a second later where Ed is turned towards me, grinning the biggest grin. I love these memories. I have very few photos of my big kids all facing the same direction. ;)

  9. Oh, those kiddles! Does that photo feel like forever ago?

It's incredibly generous of you to bake and bake and bake when you can't enjoy any of it.

  10. This was fascinating. I love getting to know bloggers on a deeper level.

    Booo celiac.

A new career...hmm. I love interior design and would NOT be good at it, but I think if I had a different personality that would be a perfect job for me? If I got to choose anything, I think I'd pick a pro singer. I love music and singing.

But mostly I'm a work-from-home SAHM with no set career. Hey - it works. I'm trying to Let. It. Go. My degrees feel somewhat worthless at this point, but I'm more and more okay with that :)

  11. My kids went to an in-home daycare and they loved it. It was the best of both worlds. Sally (the provider) was the best. Very serious and matter-of-fact but kids were great under her care. God bless'er for the first three years of my kids' lives

  12. Family dynamics are so challenging, aren't they? I find myself just quietly backing out of a lot of family events and keeping very, very quiet.

It's interesting. My husband's reactions to minute amounts of gluten mean that we only have GF baking ingredients in our house, so he can eat everything I make. (This also prevents cross contamination in pots and utensils.) Are you able to bake with non-GF ingredients without a reaction? If so, that's amazing and I am super duper jealous.

  13. Nicole - Thanks. I can't believe how that photo seems like just yesterday while also feeling like decades ago. I'm quite sure alcohol isn't the answer, but I was thrilled to sleep 8 hours. Only a few more days until I can take the SIBO test and go back on my antacid pills.

  14. Ally - Thank you. I'm trying to be brief during NaBloPoMo, so I tried to keep my intro short and sweet. Hopefully I'll get in a groove and be able to do that after the month ends. I an only imagine how much time you devote to your blog. It is like a career.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ah thank you. I have a better picture of your now. It is helpful to for new readers. This makes me think if I should have done one of the introductions too.

I feel you on the socializing. The husband is in meetings and with people all day and when he gets home (I work from home) I. talk and talk and talk.

  16. I loved reading this and feel like I can follow along better now. Thank you! I learned medical technical assistant but wanted to study medicine after. For various reasons I did not end up doing it (including an ex-boyfriend who went through business school at the time). No regrets, but maybe I would do it in my next life? If I would switch careers now,I would do something more creative. Pottery maybe?

  17. I feel like I'm the reason you have to explain that you name isn't really Ernie. lol :)

I'd like to be a historian specializing in local history or school district history. I had way to much fun looking through the yearbooks at a small town museum last summer.

  18. Love the intro and can't wait to read more

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nice to meet you, which is one of the great things about NaBloPoMo, gets us out of our usual bubble of friends and family, like a walk around a new town.

  20. I love these intros! Sometimes it's hard to start reading a new blog- I feel like I'm starting in the middle of a book. Speaking of which... thanks for the homework (ha ha.) I'm in blog-reading mode tonight but I'll come back and read the chapter tomorrow. I'm impressed that you've had stories published.
Hang in there- this sounds like a tough week but Friday is coming!

  21. Nance - It DOES feel like forever ago.

I think my baking for people other than me is more or less a structured diet. I mean, I CAN bake with GF flour. Also, I find GF four makes things taste different.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Elisabeth - Thanks for reading my intro. I guess you'd have pieced it together eventually.

A pro singer or an interior designer. Both exciting career options - neither would be something I could handle or would have the talent for. If I could have unlimited talked of my choosing? I'd be a best selling author. Dare to dream.

My dad used to enjoy a comic strip called Family Circle. There was one that killed him - it was a mom with a bunch of kids clinging to her while she made dinner with the caption: FOR THIS I WENT TO COLLEGE. I feel that nowadays.

    ReplyDelete
  23. mom of children - that's awesome. I am still in contact with many of the families that I sat for who've graduated to school and beyond. When I stop and think about it, and let's fact it - most of the time I'm just racing around, I do realize that what I do is fairly impactful. I'm not recreating the wheel here. Just doing the same type of thing I did with my gang.

  24. NGS - My family-of-origin situations frustrate me often. I usually end up keeping most of it quiet until I get home/around my kids/Coach. Then I let loose. Recently I texted my thoughts in a sibling group chat because they were being thoughtless and I'd had it. It was in regards to communicating about my parents' health. They text about EVERY detail but leave off something MAJOR? WTF?

Oh, hell no. I bake with gluten but I don't eat any of it. I rarely make something GF. If I make it GF, I will be the only one to eat it. This is one part sensible and several parts sticking to a healthy diet for me.

  25. Tobia - I'm glad you found it helpful. I honestly wasn't expecting new visitors to my blog. What a pleasant surprise. But then I was like - Oh, hang on - they need some background on me.

Yep. You and I are the same there. I get a lot of heat for my constant talking.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Meike - Great - glad you feel like you have more info now.

That's interesting. I feel similarly. I love to sew and do artsy things. I wonder what life would've been like if I'd gone into costume or set design. How wild would that have been? My family was very traditional and there wasn't really any thinking outside the box, so it never crossed my mind.

  27. Jenny in WV - I'm a tad lost . . .. you might need to remind me about this? Did you ask me once why I went by Ernie?

A local historian? Hmm. Old yearbooks are a hoot, aren't they? The fashion alone is entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sarah - thanks. Looking forward to it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. VAXhacker - This is a good comparison. It's like attending an open house. Thanks for visiting.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jenny - You nailed it. Reading a book by starting in the middle is very much what it feels like to jump into a new-territory blog. It feels awkward when there's a set group. I often feel like I'm intruding, etc. I'm glad you're here. No pressure to read my story - it was published almost 2 years ago, so I had to check that it was still there. Happily, it is.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That is a great picture, and the 'acid-filled stomach into a silver lining' is a very funny line.
Yeah, anybody with that many kids who does anything but cook and clean would kick ass at any job involving logistics.

  32. I joined San's NaBloPoMo last year for the first time, and found all of these new blogs, but it was the middle of November already when I found the group...it really did feel like starting in the middle of a book, and suddenly people were coming by, and it was wonderful. It's taken me awhile to keep them separate in my mind, and get to know everyone a bit more. I'm enjoying learning about you now, too!

I have a BA in International Relations and a MA in Comparative Literature, and I work in the non-technical side of a Payroll IT company. I don't use my education at all, except critical thinking I guess. I'm fine with it. My problem is that I have no idea what I would do if I could do anything. Travel photographer? Some kind of therapy with horses? Librarian? No idea.

My family is complicated, but I get along with all of my siblings and love them dearly. I just live far away from them all, which sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  33. PS, I also LOVE the picture of your kids at the Grand Canyon, and I remember playing games like that with parachutes when I was a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ali - I appreciate the high praise for my funny line coming from you, my comedy-is-my-vibe friend.

I feel like there are now all kinds of majors that didn't exist back in the day. It was very accounting or finance or blah, blah - now it's supply chain and logistics and other get-in-the-consumer-brain sort of stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  35. J - Ha, I was just heading over to your blog. I've followed Ali at Bibliomama and I knew she did this crazy thing where she wrote daily for a month, but that was all I knew of it. Now, here I am. I really was thinking this would help me get around to sharing the news I need to share, because it's a LOT. It didn't occur to me that I'd be meeting new bloggers. I feel like I should've updated my header or something, like cleaning house before guests arrive. ;) I appreciate you making the effort to come read my posts.

I'm always interested in hearing how people land in the work that they do and how it may or may not have involved their actual degree. I wonder what I would do if I knew then what I knew now. I'm honestly kind of glad I'm not a teacher, but that was my initial plan. A mom I babysat for talked me out of it, telling me I'd never meet a husband. What?

Thanks - I love looking back at photos. I took a lot of pictures. I bought that parachute on FB marketplace last year, dirt cheap. It's been a welcome addition to my daycare. They get so excited when I take it out.

  36. What a great introduction! I feel like I know you THAT much more already. And I love how clever your online name, Ernie, is :)

6 kids. I am amazed. I can see why you didn't get to pursue a different career. You had your hands full. That is a great picture of your crew from the Grand Canyon.

And I LOVE that your son pointed out a t-shirt that he thought was perfect for you that said UNDERESTIMATE ME, THAT'LL BE FUN.
    What a nice compliment :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ohmygosh, thank you so much for posting this. I've been reading long enough - barely - to start to figure out who's who but I hope to get an even clearer picture (what are all the kids' [nick] names? where did Ernie's name come from?) as you post more in this...series?
Um, I'd argue you're using your business degree every single day since, you know, you *run your own business*. Just sayin'.

  38. Waiting impatiently for the Shenanigan News!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. San - I'm glad you feel more oriented by my intro. I just hadn't expected so many visitors, or I would've prepared that early on. New blog friends has been such a pleasant surprise.

I should've bought myself that t-shirt and then worn it when Coach and I had yet ANOTHER sit down with the principal. He is not doing enough to address the varsity b-ball coach at our high school. It's very frustrating.

My kids do constantly remind me that they are thrilled that I was at home with them when they were little guys, and big guys for that matter.

  40. Anne - Thanks for being interested in my crazy crew. I will give a write up of each of the players in my next post - or one soon. If you read today's post, you will learn about my nickname.

You are correct. Technically I am a business owner. Maybe because it is in my home and I get paid cash, it doesn't always feel like that. I will say over the years I've become more self assured, not taking nonsense form crazy folks. I tend to be a crazy folk magnet. Oddly enough.

  41. Beth - Hang in there. I need a chunk of time to draft it, then chop it up into bite sized posts. It's coming. Maybe early next week? Fingers crossed. Or possibly later this week, if naptime goes well and I find the time.

  42. I love that photo!
This was a lovely refresher for me as I knew all of this, but still it's nice to have it brought to the forefront.
I DO hope Uncle Sam isn't reading this or he'll be at your door collecting Tax Dollars in a split second.

Your essay was SO stinking good and your sisters are SO stinking weird.
Um, the Tampon story should be on your front page. 😳😳😳

    ReplyDelete
  43. Suz - I so enjoy looking back at all the photos from our vacations with the kids. This one is super sweet. I have a similar one of them in Vancouver, all leaning over a wall to watch a street performer. It's more of a LOOK AT OUR BUTTS shot though. ;)

My sisters are nuts. Uncle Sam better stay away. I cannot afford to part with any of my dough.

The tampon story still can make me laugh so hard. One of the funniest things ever.

  44. really interesting way to introduce yourself. 6 kids??? you are my hero! :)

  45. coco - thanks for stopping by. Yep, 6 kids. I grew up wanting 10 kids, but now I saw that 6 is the new 10.
